My girlfriend's birthday is coming up next month, I know she loves a good seafood buffet. Any recommendations? :)

Seafood buffet at The Star is famous. Not sure if you can book or not.

Ah thanks. Photos look great on google. I'm thinking about Crown's as well.

I have only tried the breakfast buffet at the Star when stayed there few years ago. Going by that experience you will not go wrong. Someone had also suggested Novatel in Botany also had the sea food buffet on Sundays. You could look up reviews online to decide.

Check with the restaurant whether buffets are allowed at the moment. Self serve buffets and pandemics don’t mix.

Star Harvest Buffet is definitely open for business.
Seafood is Thursday to Sunday only.
It is the one to go for.
Endless high quality seafood and fresh.
$89 per person is actually pretty reasonable.
You will pay a lot more dining a la carte.

Crown definitely has the wow factor with lobster and sashimi. Langham also great. Star is probably the best value.

I wasn't aware Crown has lobster but if it has then amazing!

Yes they are. I wouldn't go near that, but hey it's a free country.

Yes, I would second this one. The hotel has actually been renamed “Sheraton Grand, Sydney” after Marriott bought out Starwood. The buffet also meets NSW COVIDSafe regulations by having the staff serve you. You walk up to the buffet and tell the staff what you want. They will serve as much as you want onto a plate before handing it over to you. You can then keep going back asking for more. Shells and dirty plates are collected and cleared from your table as per usual.

Place over in Manly that makes a really good seafood platter - nothing fried.

Manly fish cafe? I think? Maybe not so top end but Manly is nice for a walk etc..

Not sure if it’s a quarantine hotel. Maybe it stopped the quarantine side but isn’t ready to take bookings for rooms. I received a marketing email from them saying it is taking bookings for tonight (Friday 15-October)

The Star is the way to go. I have only heard of positive things about the buffet.

A few years ago I used to go regularly to the Astral room for buffet breakfast. My wife had a relative who worked for the casino and we could get vouchers for about $5.

At first it was good, but over time they reduced the menu selections, eventually to the point where it was hardly worth going for.

I'd noticed this trend at a lot of buffet places, even Sizzlers.

Personally I think the Garden Buffet at the Sheraton on the Park was the best in Sydney. But haven’t been back since it became the Sheraton Grand or since the Pandemic started. Nevertheless, if the OP is planning to take the lady out for a nice treat, I don’t think the Star is the right place, try the Sheraton please.

Agree if you were taking a girl out for an impressive romantic dinner then a buffet would not be the way to go.
A nice a la carte restaurant would be more romantic.
But the OP says his girlfriend loves a good seafood buffet, so she sounds like a down to earth girl, so The Star would be great for that.
Also the pandemic has actually made buffets much nicer because they are much more civilised now, with staff serving you, so you are not wrestling with angry aunties going straight for the most expensive items :)

I agree don’t get me wrong the Star Buffet is amazing but if you want it to be a bit more intimate with her the Seafood Platter at Sea Level Cronulla is amazing with beautiful views on the water and they will do a platter for her only if need be reasonably priced and she will never foget it IMO.

Thanks for everyone's input! Didn't think so many ppl would comment. Yeah nah my girl cares about the food more than the setting.

I think I'm gonna pick Sheraton (if covid settles down). Still have a month before the actual date. Sheraton looks pretty decent and seating doesn't look as crowded as Crown.

Yes, and sometimes you think you're getting abalone but instead you get sea urchin.

I went to a seafood buffet at a pub in Manly, it was also serving Sashimi, there was a bowl of Wasabi close by when this dope in front of me took a huge scoop of it onto a cracker thinking it was guacamole dip, the reaction and the aftermath was worth the price of admission alone....:fire:

Are we still talking seafood, or have we descended into euphemisms again?

Hahaha, that would've been priceless to watch! I almost did something similar. Sat down at a sushi Bar in Tokyo. There was a big tub of green looking powder, soy sauce, small sauce plates, cups and a hot water tap in front of me. So I took the sauce plate, heaped some green powder into it, and was about to pour soy sauce onto it when the sushi guy stopped me and said "That's green tea powder, sir!".
I think my face turned redder than the tuna!

I think my face turned redder than the tuna!I did the exact same thing in Osaka but no one stopped me.

I found out the hard way it was macha powder and the water from the little tap was boiling hot.

I just pretended like nothing happened.

The food was amazing but the place I was at was pricey.

Still busy enough but nowhere near as busy as they used to be when there were dozens of bus loads of tourists every day.
It's actually much nicer now.
Actually now that we are out of lockdown is a good time to get around Sydney again.
Places are much less packed and less stressful without all the swarms of tourists everywhere.

You can't fault the Harvest buffet at the Star. Lots to eat but it can get very crowded and many families turning up with kids. The Crown Casino is supposed to be classy but this is why the price is more than the Star. I recall the Shangri-La use to have a good seafood buffet. It wasn't a very large venue so it was ideal for two people. I'm not sure if the hotel has brought back the buffet.

Went there a few times with an old gf about 20 years ago. Been wondering whether it was still going when this thread came up.

It has been a Quarantine place since last year. Don't know current status.

No chance, the best seafood Buffett in Sydney all time was at the Shangri la and when it was called the ANA it had the best Japanese restaurant in Sydney Unki.

Had tried a Xmas seafood buffet at the Cafe Opera, I’ll give it a pass mark. The Garden Buffet at the Sheraton on the Park was better.

In the city, i think the best choice are only GrandBuffet@Sheraton or the HarvestBuffet@Star.
However, the HarvestBuffet@Star is more of a family and friends atmosphere. GrandBuffet@Sheraton is probably your choice if you are going with your gf.

Can confirm Cafe Opera is not currently open. The hotel is currently undergoing a large refurbishment and they have limited f&b offerings. They have even sent out an email to their elite Loyalty program members that they will not likely be offering full five star service or elite room upgrades due to having so many rooms and facilities out of service.
