I've had a few girls contact me through Wechat, and the same conversation goes as follows:

How old are you?
Are you married?
What's your occupation?
I use Whatsapp - add me to your Whatsapp (I always say I have no Whatsapp)
This is my business Wechat, I'll add you to my personal Wechat.
Send me a photo, let's exchange photos (which I don't)
Conversation then stops

So my question is, what are they trying to get??

It is a scam - usually after chatting for a while they reveal how they make lots of money trading gold or crypto and they can help you - you send money it disappears

I don't think we even consider that to be anything other than a scam. Get some basic info, talk a while, tells you she loves you, send money. Most people know it's a scam. Aimed at the gullible.

Sorry, I didn't really phrase my question properly - I know it's a scam, but what is the scam?

So if I keep playing along, they'll straight up ask for money etc for investing

Yes a scam. Also you might get the mistaken identity at the start. "Hello John" and it starts from there.

I've just had one via Linkedin. Absolute hot Korean, early 30s. Contacted me as she is contact with two of mine. Wants to move from Linkedin to Whatsapp after a few pleasantries.

Deleted contact.

First few of these I got were referral profiteering from cryptocurrency exchanges in china. You sign up and buy US$100 worth of bitcoin, they got $10 worth too. So I just spammed the shit out of their referrer code with winnie the pooh images. Get their accounts nuked pretty quick.

The new scams I've not had the patience to get to the links stage. I drop them at the whatsapp part now unless I feel theres something more fun to do with them later.

I had one of these I met via the “people nearby” feature back in 2018, when it wasn’t completely full of scammers and still worth a look. We chatted for a few months but her trading gains never impressed me enough to enquire about how I could do the same!

These days, especially since the pandemic, a lot more people have gotten into trading shares, forex or crypto, and the grifters are everywhere.

What is it about asking for Whatsapp ? I often wonder if they then sell off your information to other scammer.
