Sir!
you bet the horse. if the horse win, you win money at ratio.
say if the horse odds at TAB is n:m then -> if you bet k dollars, you win (mk)/n amount. your return is ((mk)/n - k) / k or ((m-n)k)/(nk).

the horse, i say is irrelevant to the Melbourne Cup, its the odds of winning we focus on.
if we assume the expectation of game play is 0. then you can safely say n/m is the TAB odds of the horse winning. you can buy the horse with the highest ratio n/m -> as it is the favourite horse. in spanish la bonita du cheval

Thx, bro.
When I look at TAB, there is Win amount and Place amount I could bet, what's that?

the win amount is when you, as a player, set how much you want to win in money terms if you win.
the place amount is when you, as a player, set how much you are prepared to lose in money terms. so how much you put on table for gamble

it is say, like when you put petrol in tank... you can set by litre or by dollar amount.

Hi brother, its the Aussie way that everyone will bet on Melbourne Cup day!

For a win bet, obviously the horse you selected has to win the race = comes first in the race. Depending on the odds, you can win a multiple of how much you bet on.
Eg, if the horse is paying $6.00 and you bet $10 for the win, you will collect $60.00

A place bet is to bet on a horse which will run 1st, 2nd or 3rd in the race, as you have more chances, your odds will be reduced.

Take the same horse who pays $6.00 for the win, will likely to pay $2.50 for the place.

An each way bet is to place the same amount of money on the same horse to win and to run a place. So for this horse you can bet $10 each way = total cost $20

If it wins, you collect $60+$25=$85
If it runs 2nd or 3rd, your win bet is lost but you win on the place bet and collect $25, so you still ahead $5.00 from your $20 investment.

So if you not sure if the horse can win, you can put the $20 on place bet only and collect $50 for the place win, its up to you how much risk you willing to take on your gamble. In the same race, a $20 win bet will return $120 if the horse came 1st!!

If the horse ran 4th or beyond, you lost your $20!!

So, want to have some fun??

I think this year the French horses are gonna be very hard to beat again, two former winners in the last two years, and Dunaden came back to win the Caulfield Cup and Americain ran forth. If I have ever seen a good Cup trial, nothing better than that and the scary part is, they had both won it before and they will both be a better horse at two miles !!

So, I think this year it's very simple, it's a 1, 2 for the French. Just like when Makybe Diva and Vinnie Roe ran 1-2, and Zazzman ran 3rd at 100-1 (I got that trifecta by the way !!)

So without losing too many sleeps, my bet for the Melbourne Cup this year will be 1,2/2,1/field for the trifecta @$44.00 and fingers cross for a roughie getting third, just like Zassman and On a Jeune. Voila Ici @ 151-1 will be fantastic.

And just for good measures, put a $6.00 boxed trifecta for 1, 2 and 4 !! Red Cadeaux was so close last year, should be there about again this year.

The best local horse, well, it's Allcopop who won the Mackinnon on Saturday but isn't in the Cup - WTF!! the forms surrounding Allcopop since the Caulfield Stakes is so strong - which just highlighted Dunaden's win in the Caulfield Cup. Enough said.

Good luck every one.

Viva la France - C'est la vie !!

The overseas horses are so dominant in 2011, it will be just the same this year:

2011 Cup finishing order:

1. Dunaden
2. Red Cadeaux
3. Lucas Cranach (oversea horse but trained locally)
4. Americain
5. Managhar
6. Lost in the Moment
7. Fox Hunt
8. Niwot
9. Unusual Suspect
10. At First Sight
11. Precedence
12. Drunken Sailor
13. The Verminator
14. Tullamore
15. Moyenne Corniche
16. Saptipadi
17. older Than Time
18. Hawk Island
19. Illo
20. Jukebox Jury
21. Shamrocker
22. Glass Harmonium
23. Modun

The overseas horses taken out the top 7!!

The horses finished 8, 9, 11 are running again this year, you can skip them.

On the other hand, the horses who finished 1st, 2nd and 4th are running again this year. And the 1st and 4th horses also ran 1st and 4th in the Caulfield Cup.

It's sad that the best local horse Allcopop is not running. But Dunaden and Americain will be so hard to beat.

Just my two cents

Cheers

Deja Vu !!

ps. my win bet is on Americain !!

I am not that interested in watching horses galloping.

If you really want to bet on horses on Melbourne cup, just put $10 on the one that has the highest ratio.
If you win, good on ya! Free beer for the rest of the night.
If you loose, that's a good excuse to drink the rest of the night.

I usually bet on sure things only, so I'm going to bet my $150 on Ada. She's a much better ride.

Hi brother Licker,

I am with you there on the sure bet, unfortunately Lisa is not working today, otherwise I would be burying myself deep into her bossoms win, lose or draw.

By the way, who is Ada ??

And what do you mean by highest Ratio ??

Good luck with you $10.

Bro Ahlungor,

Sorry, I meant to said odds not ratio.
So a true gamble. You're unlikely to win, but if you do it's big.

This would be the one I call the Duchess of Joy Ada (http://forum.aus99.com/showthread.php?2606-Ada-the-best-of-times)
Two of my reviews in that thread, along with notes from a bro who seems concerned about my love life :)

I don't think Americain will win it - the track has been upgraded to a Good (3) and it has glued on shoes.

I'm on Dunaden to win it, Red Cadeaux and Mount Athos will be there too I think.

Might try my luck on a boxed trifecta of:

Dunaden
Mount Athos
Red Cadeaux
Americain
Maluckyday

Fxxx!!!!!!!

What the fuck is Green Moon!

I think only the people from 5 Star would have a reason to back it !!

But then again, Llyod Williams last winner Efficient ran 9th in the Cox Plate before winning, and Green Moon ran 7th and his form before than was far better, winning the Turnbull at Flemington. He is very smart (the owner that is).

OK, it is now proven that weights do stop a train, and as good as the top two, they simply can't carry those weight and win, well, there is always next year.

Cheers

and that First 4 paying $1.4 Million, bloody hell,.

So the placing for the Cup today is 14, 11, 3, 24

None of the favourites even got close, all outsiders. I don't know how you can pick those horses unless you were born on the Novermber 14 and your partner's Bday is March 24!!

So you got your 11, 14, 3, 24! Would you know how to turn that into $1.4 millions dollars??
