Shame (2011)

http://theblurb.com.au/Issue134/SHPstr2.jpeg

Directed By: Steve McQueen (III)

Brandon (Michael Fassbender) is a New Yorker who shuns intimacy with women but feeds his desires
with a compulsive addiction to sex. When his wayward younger sister (Carey Mulligan)
moves into his apartment stirring memories of their shared painful past, Brandon's insular life spirals out of control.

Very good movie, with a harrowing view into the world of sex addiction.

I'm sure it will be suitably weird ...

"I am a Sex Addict" is a pretty cool and quirky film.
Actually this is another excuse for me to quote my favourite piece of dialogue from this film.
This is the third thread I have used it in.
Here it is ....

Client: " I love you"
Prostitute: (coldly) I know. Now please take a shower.

I love it!

Yeah. I figured it's bound to be bullshit and 90mins of my life I'll never get back.
But maybe one day when I am impotent and have lost the will to live maybe I will watch it.

Shame has some excellent reviews - even one person calling it a masterpiece
see here (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1723811/reviews?ref_=tt_urv)

I have it somewhere - need to dig it out and actually watch it fully- raw and confronting- from the snippits I had seen

It is really a brilliant movie..

Deep, enriching, powerful, thought invoking

Nothing amateur like the other movies mentioned in this thread..

Have you seen air doll ?
From IMDB:
the film is a meditation of life, and the fragility of it, where people are constantly in search of substitutes for things they cannot obtain to fulfill some need or want, which reflects quite well of our modern life where distractions are many, and substitution being a way of life from products to services. I absolutely loved how Kore-eda provided us scenes of satisfaction with a montage of lonely people doing simple things, to that switch later on with dissatisfaction with the same. It's a wonderful fantasy film that makes us reflect on our own parallels, but doesn't do so in a preachy way, instead relying on tragedy and especially comedy through the literal interpretation of things, to lighten the mood.

SHAME……movie review

Brandon (Michael Fassbender ), good looking dude, mid 30's, trendy executive type, lives and works in New York, has his own apartment and is a sex addict. All his spare time is spent looking at porn , fucking prostitutes and pulling himself. One day his younger sister , who looks nothing like him and has a unfulfilled need to be loved comes to stay and he is not happy about it.

Brandon finds it impossible to have a normal relationship, when he does go on a date with a very attractive work colleague and books a room at a classy hotel, he can't get it up . After she goes he calls a prostitute and gives her a standing doggy against the window for all to see.

After Brandon rejects his sister and tells her to move on , he goes on a sex binge in the seedy part of town , which includes a head job off a bloke he picks up at a mens club followed by a double at a cheap asian fuck shop plus getting his arse kicked off a boyfriend of a slut he fingers in a bar .

On his way home Brandon senses that his sister is in trouble and arrives home to find she has attempted suicide. Brandon seems to have a sort of epiphany after this event and realises he needs he sibling even though they have committed incest in the past and is the cause of his deep seated shame but I am just guessing that last bit as their childhood is never revealed and there is no mention of incest.

This movie has little dialogue , in fact not a word spoken in the first ten minutes and moves at a very slow pace. I almost walked but I stuck with it. I left feeling disturbed as it was coming from such a dark place and the mood of the movie was sombre and empty. There was a lot of sex but no titillation . All the sex sense had a sense of desperation as if the only joy Brandon got was the 2 or 3 seconds as he ejaculates , there was no intimacy, just self loathing

Not my cup of tea but I did find myself thinking about it for a long time and it did receive a lot of critical acclaim . I liked the New York setting. The New York style music works well with songs from the Tom Tom Club and John Coltrane to name a few.
2 out of 10 . Just not my thing . ymmv

first off you should start your post with **SPOILER ALERT** so you dont ruin the movie for anyone that hasnt seen it.

i thought it was brilliant and if you have ever dealt with addiction that is exactly what its like. Dark, empty. A movie like this needs little to no dialogue as it is shot perfectly with flawless acting.

you should stick to high budget action packed family box office flicks as it sounds like you are used to

Utter crap - don't waste your time. And a perfect example of why she should stick to porn then try to break into the big screen!
