(I had to post this chart on its side as this site makes horizontal images too small to read)

So Cambodia is at a very healthy society adjusted 80%, Thailand is scarcely behind at 75% while Italy is right up there at 45%. Wow! That is a surprise, must be the hot Latin blood.

Japan at 37% and Spain at 39% are also hefty slices of the male population - the dirty bastards!

Australia national honour in this regard however, is a rather disappointing 15.6%. (That is the blue coded low estimate.) But just in case that leaves you feeling a little shifty, raincoated and marginalised, that is still over 300,000 gents in Sydney alone! Man (and I do mean man) that is real peer endorsement - how many SCG's would that fill?

The figures just go to show how very unremarkable and commonplace our predilections are.

It measures all the men in those countries who have seen prostitutes, including the small fraction that claim to have stopped at just one! :shout:

You believe that ? They measure all men ?

Say in Australia, I haven't been surveyed !

An acceptable standard of any survey is to approach 1,200 people only !

I just threw my neck out :)
I think the table must be measuring the percentage of people who own up to seeing a pro, the actual percentages probably vary quite alot ...
What percentage of forum members actually see prostitutes, probably everybody except one ...

My wording wasn't detailed, I thought that people would know a survey method was being used. They didn't survey all men, they did statistical surveys of representative samples to give a guide to the total numbers.

The reason I looked up this information is that I'd just watched Michael Fassbender in "Shame", and in it he enjoyed the odd WL, and also doubles sessions with WL's. He also had a big porn stash. I wondered why the movie was called "Shame" and so went on a search to see how everyday and commonplace amongst men visiting WL's is in reality. I suppose there is no 'box' office in Hollywood treating this in a casual, normalised manner.

What is it with the UK too? 8.8%? They must be a bit prudish!

It may be that they don't have brothels like we do here it is illegal to run a brothel.

You can still see a girl but they tend to be one girl working out of one hotel room.

I think that makes it a little harder to go for a punt you can't just go when you feel like it you have to plan ahead.

what I take away from this survey is that the proportion of australian men who have visited a prostitute is comparatively low. its interesting that a greater proportion of US men have visited a prostitute despite it being illegal in all states except one.
I see that Australia doesn't have a separate grey bar (estimate / low estimate).

Possibly the 2 estimates were the same, or what I think is more likely - the 'estimate' would have been higher and is the same or higher than the US.

Interesting though.

Prostitution Pro / Con (http://prostitution.procon.org/) who released the chart, did not do the studies themselves, they just used previously done studies/reports, some of which seem to be done for some other purpose, but also included a question on paid sex.

We drew the information presented below about the male clients (johns) of prostitutes worldwide from 21 studies conducted between 1994 and 2010. We included the only 15 countries for which we found data on men paying for sex at least once in their lifetimes. We excluded countries for which we could only locate findings on paid sex during the previous year. When we located a range of estimates for one country, we listed the highest and lowest percentages found. Researchers investigating prostitutes' clientele have reported difficulty finding reliable data because of a scarcity of prior research, variations in sample sizes, and possible underreporting by survey respondents about their private sexual practices.

I am not so sure about the validity of the graph (other than it's entertaining value) nor the scientific accuracy of the comparisons.
Typically you would want to have the same questions asked from a similarly representative group of people in all countries to be able to make comparisons.

Do these two studies (Australia/USA) sound like they both had a similar survey group that represents the population as a whole?

For the Australian data the reference mentioned is the following study from 2003.

Chris E. Rissel, Juliet Richters, Andrew E. Grulich, Richard O. de Visser, Anthony M. A. Smith, "Sex in Australia: Experiences of Commercial Sex in a Representative Sample of Adults," Australian and New Zealand Journal of Public Health, Apr. 2003

Objective To describe the characteristics of Australian adults' experience of commercial sex.

Method Telephone interviews were completed by a representative sample of 10,173 men and 9,134 women aged 16–59 years (response
rate 73.1%; 69.4% men, 77.6% women). Respondents were asked about their experiences both as clients and as sex workers. Sociodemographic
and health factors associated with experience of commercial sex were explored for men.

Results: Almost one in six Australian men (15.6%) have ever paid for sex; 1.9% had done so in the past year. Of men who had ever paid
for sex, 97% had paid for sex with a woman and 3% for sex with a man. Very few women (0.1%) had ever paid for sex. Twice as many men
(0.9%) as women (0.5%) had ever been paid for sex; two-thirds of these men (0.6%) were paid by other men. Condom use during vaginal
sex was highest in parlours and brothels and with escorts, and lowest for street sex work. Two-thirds of women who had ever been paid
for sex had done so only overseas. One in 10 men who had paid for sex had only done so overseas.

For the US data the reference mentioned is the following report from 2008.

Abt Associates Inc., "Final Report on the Evaluation of the First Offender Prostitution Program," (2.2 MB) Prepared for Karen Bachar, Office of Research and Evaluation, National Institute of Justice, Mar. 7, 2008

Data Used in the Evaluation
This report presents results of analysis of secondary data sets and data from interviews,
structured program observations, and program documentation. Between September 2005 and
November 2007, the evaluation team conducted:
- Nine site visits to San Francisco.
- 99 interviews with 31 individuals associated with the FOPP.
- 65 interviews with 50 individuals associated with 40 additional actual or potential john
school sites throughout the U.S.
- Three “ride alongs” with the SFPD Narcotics/Vice Division during reverse sting
operations targeting men soliciting street prostitutes.
- Structured observations of all john school classes occurring from March 25, 2006 to
March 24, 2007.
- Pre- and post-class surveys of 198 FOPP participants.
- Program document collection.
- Web searches and reviews of professional and research literature.
- Acquisition of data from course evaluation forms completed by 535 FOPP participants.
- Acquisition of criminal history data on over 100,000 men arrested for soliciting
prostitutes in San Francisco and throughout California from the 1970s through 2005.
- Acquisition of data on all men screened for FOPP eligibility and all john school
attendees.
- Collection of cost data from the SFDA, SFPD, and SAGE.
