Hey guys, I'm assuming from reading a lot of your posts that you guys are from Asian backgrounds (I'm not), and I was wondering if you guys could help me out with some decent Hong Kong or Jap films? I've been watching a lot of John Woo, Shaw Brothers and Golden Harvest... If it's alright to discuss on films here (sorry admin!) then let me know over this, or just pm me
Thanks guys :)

I don't have anything on top of my head, any particular genre ? If you're more specific, I'm sure there will be lots of recommendations.

Election 1 & 2 isn't too bad for a gangster flick. For kung fu, you wont do very wrong looking for movies with Donnie Yen the actor in it.

That is a heeectic list, bro lol. Some of my favourites. I've seen all the Bruce Lee stuff (including a recent documentary called I Am Bruce Lee which I think everyone should see!) and a lot of the anime type stuff I love, like 300, Sin City and A Better Tomorrow (the second one had a huge influence on my favourite anime; Cowboy Bebop). Thanks for the help bro :) will definitely be hitting that up, as well as Donnie Yen movies and Infernal Affairs (I think you guys were spelling it wrong lol). I loved The Departed so Infernal Affairs should be an interesting viewing :)

Thanks for the help guys :) I'll definitely be hitting you up for more recommendations in the future

Haha, I didn't notice, it's actually Internal affairs, if you talk about the 1990 Holiwood production ! But I think these brothers are talking about the HongKong Production of Infernal Affairs 1,2,3

and Donnie Yen is a true martial artist !

Jean Claude's acts are very well choreographed, so is Donnie Yen's, all choreographed by HongKong martial artists. But Jean Claude's were a bit old fashioned for today's standard, too good looking to the point of imposibility, meaning it won't be like that in real life. But Donnie Yen's are more realistic and contemporary.

I'll call Jackie Chan more of an actor than a martial artist.

Have you seen any of the 1970's kung fu stuff? I know they're really cheesy but I think the choreography there was way beyond its time, as well as the philosophical elements that are either derived from kung fu, or form the basis of kung fu took the movies to another level. Also, Jackie in those films was doing some really great films in that period... Shame to see him go all Hollywood :( but yeah, completely agree on your statement, he studied at a Peking Opera school didn't he? He also lived in Canberra from what I've heard haha

There was a kung fu movie that just came out with Lucy Liu (who I'm in love with lol) Russell Crowe and the RZA called The Man With The Iron Fists, do you know much about it??

wilisno
27-12-2012, 03:39 AM
Yeah, Jackie's family still lives in Canberra, and yes, the classical Kung Fung films were all choreographed with authentic and traditional Chinese martial art moves, just that it was done at a very slow pace, not really convincing these days, but it's good to see the fundamentals of the art in slow motion !

Yes, this was a top flick, I watched this flick a couple of years ago and i still remember it......... Old Boy was not bad too, but not as good as I saw the Devil...

Man from Nowhere 2010 is good too, similar plot to Taken, starts off slow, but once it kicks in, it's action all the way!!.......

Hmm some of my favorite martial arts and HK action films (not all as this is just off the top of my head)

Jet Li - Fist of Legend
Jet Li -Once upon a time in China
Jacky chan - Drunken master 2
Jacky chan - Project A (I & II)
Jacky chan - Police story (I & II) hmm maybe part 3 as well
John Woo - Hard Boiled <-- amazing
John Woo - The killer <-- amazing

The era of Jacky Chan + Samo Hung + Yuen Baio (not sure of the spellin) was a special one. The choreography and the skill level in stunts by those 3 together is still unparalleled in "no cutaway" what you see is what you get stunts. I think it will die / have died with those 3.

Some softer but very stylish ones also -
Crouching tiger hidden dragon
Hero

Wilson, can u PM your list of your favorite? I suddenly have the urge to see some of the ones i have not seen as mentioned by others here.

Good thread!

Some random contributions about Asian cinema

DO NOT WATCH THE FOLLOWING

Lan Kwai Fong 1 and 2
33D Invader
Due West: Our Sex Journey

Absolute garbage... all three of them. Just cos you got a couple of hot models who go naked and engage in some simulated sex, doesn't mean its a movie.

Chinese movies, recent ones I watched that I had enjoyed was DIVA, and Vulgaria - which is absolutely hilarious if you understand the slang they use.
Epic Movies I would recommend:
HERO
Warlords
Red Cliff 1 and 2

Triad movies
I would go for Election 1 and 2... I don't like the Y&D movies because the youngins spoiled the movie for me by acting like they were Chan Ho Nam, I heard they are rebooting the franchise too.
Infernal Affairs trilogy I would rank as the following:
2 (absolute favourite), 1 and then 3.
Protege with Daniel Wu and Andy Lau is a good one
Jiang Hu with Andy Lau and Jackie Cheung is good, weird at times, but stylish, don't watch the follow up Ah So, it's shit.

Echoes of the Rainbow is excellent drama, funny its nostalgic even though I wasn't even born around that time, but I was watching it with my mum the other night and she was telling me that life was really like that back in the old days.

Golden Chicken 1 and 2 is funny as hell, but great storyline.

We move to Korea... for a time they were tuning out some amazing movies
Memories of Murder, Bittersweet Life, Oldboy (fucking amazing movie), Sympathy for Mr Vengeance and also Lady Vengeance, the Host, My Sassy girl is a good and well known one, I also seen Il Mare (remade into Lake House) - the ending to Il Mare made me cry... yes I cried and The Classic, which was a good movie.
Lately I recommend Chaser, Yellow Sea, I saw the Devil and Nameless Gangster

Japanese movies, I don't watch as much, they don't really hold a candle to a lot of the recent Korean and Chinese products. Though the 21st Century Boys trilogy was good (have not read the manga which I hear is 100 times better than the movie), I also seen Seaside Motel or something like that, that was a light hearted comedy. With Japanese movies, anything with Takashi Kitano I will watch, last one being Outrage which was awesome, my fav Kitano movie is Sonatine, a movie about Yakuza men hiding out at a beach side hut.

Talk to me about movies, I have my knowledge of good cinema.

Since nobody is really talking about Japanese films, here's a few I stumbled across on a recent samurai film binge:

13 Assassins (2010)
The Hidden Blade (2004)
When the Last Sword is Drawn (2003)

They're fairly easy to get a hold of. Oh, and while you're at it, you might as well watch Letters From Iwo Jima (2006).

Recently watched an Australian film called Careless Love directed by John Duigan. It tells the story of Lihn a Vietnamese Australian University student who secretly starts work as a part time escort to assist her family who are experiencing financial difficulties. For a time she manages her two lives in separate compartments, but when she falls for a fellow student her worlds collide and she must summon all her courage to deal with the fallout and emotional chaos that follows. I found it be very interesting even though it is fictional it gave me some insight into what it may be like for some of those young massage and working ladies that we see out there.

Hey Amos33,

I recently watched that movie as well.

The movie may have been fiction but I am certain that there are hundreds of working girls who have a similar if not the same story.

It sort of struck a chord with me too.
