It's not a bad system but I personally find that haruspicy works better.
I should add that I am a fully trained and ordained haruspex .
Heptomancy, augury, necromancy also have strong predictive powers.
If you are a bit squeamish about this sort of thing you can always cast the I-Ching or throw the Runes.
They will give you a rough idea, but you should still confirm with a bit of haruspicy before committing.
