All comes down to supply and demand. What makes it worse is that the money can be made fast and "easily" which makes supply somewhat inelastic.

It's actually cheaper in Sydney for a lot of things. The population is bigger, so prices are less. In one day in Sydney (CBD this is, so you'd expect the burbs to be cheaper)

1. Bought Pot of tea and a big slice of cake for $3.50. In a Brisbane cafe that'd be close to ten bucks. Note I wrote "pot" not "cup". So in fact I got like 2.5 cups of tea.

2. Bought a packet of 7 bonds underwear for 6 bucks (broadway, Kmart I think or Big W).
Bought 5 pear of Bonds business socks for 5 bucks.
Bought 2 white undershirts for 9 dollars.

All that for 20 bucks. No way in hell you can buy that in Brisbane at that price.

Rent is higher of course, but everything else seemed cheaper.

A huge number of international students near the city in Sydney
They are a captive market, and they are frugal but frequent grocery shoppers
Prices have always been cheap, just need to know where to shop, and where to avoid (tourist traps)

I must have got lucky because that cafe was near circular key and then I drove south (via broadway as I mentioned) and those were the first one I walked into.

Yes, Australia is seriously a mecca now for international students
Most of them, I would say, are far more interested in books than in socialising, but I agree, its a visual feast

If you can pick the different languages, you can play an international game of "how many nationalities can I pass by today ?"

Lets see ... Korean, Chinese/Taiwanese, Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese, Tagalog are some of the languages you will hear
