The Red Light Fades in Kings Cross - Is this the End of An Era ?

TREE-LINED Kellett St was once the premier red-light zone of Kings Cross, an alleyway infamous for its brothels and "gentleman's clubs"
But it has become a microcosm of the larger changes occurring in the precinct a year after State Government lockout laws began to change the fabric of the Cross
The sex industry claim the lock- out laws are destroying its businesses in Kings Cross

Brothel Era On Its Last Legs - Lockout Laws Major Impact

Kings Cross has undergone a significant evolution since the inception of the lockout laws just over 12 months ago
At the centre of this major change is Kellet Street, which was once full of brothels
In the past 12 months, several adult establishments have closed and sold, including number 16, which was once an eight room brothel known as "City Cleopatra"
Its new owner says "brothels no longer have a place in Kings Cross"
"People no longer come to Kellett St for brothels, they are here for the friendly night-life"
Erotic massage parlour 'At Michelles' has had to close its doors early on weekends, thanks to a drop in the "out of town revellers"
"We used to shut at 5am on weekends, we know close around 1-2 am"
"The impact is due to the lockouts"

THE fabled red light that once defined Kings Cross is starting to fade as the precinct continues to undergo a major gentrification in the wake of the State Government’s lockout laws.

Once famed for its late night parties, greasy storefront eateries and adult entertainment, Kings Cross has undergone a significant evolution since the laws were introduced about 12 months ago.
The party days are almost history as the late night clubs and brothels are slowly replaced by small bars, restaurants and apartments.

The party crowd has started to desert Kings Cross after 2am.

Im just reporting what was news.
Fresh from the local and city newspapers
Its argued that lockouts may have impacted larger businesses in the area

Good to hear that the Cross is still alive then !

The point of the article is that a lot of the establised FS establishments are closing, and not being replaced

All the best to "Smiling Angels"

Seems like it is replacing a FS shop

Businesses generally are facing declines in patronage in the Kings Cross area
Either due to the Lockout laws, or due to a change in customer demographics
Or a combination of the two factors

Shame another business couldnt take up the vacant 52 Kellett Street buildling - looks like luxury premises
