This is a punting related article - many people use their cars to get to a punt
Anyway, some dodgy Japanese company produces 20% of the worlds car air bags
For years, this company denied there was a problem with its airbags - a few people in the USA died from shrapnel when their airbags were deployed !
But finally they have admitted that their airbags have a faulty design, and when deflated the airbags can fire shrapnel into the drivers (1 / 100 risk with each airbag)
Thankfully no reported problems yet in Australia, but as described, there is a predicted 1 / 100 risk of dangerous shrapnel with the affected airbags
Check to see if your car is on the list (see below)

MORE than half a million cars in Australia are now part of what has become the world’s biggest automotive recall for airbags that can spray shrapnel — and the figure is set to climb.
Concerned motorists have swamped the government’s information website recalls.gov.au (http://www.recalls.gov.au/content/index.phtml/itemId/952855/fromItemId/952839)crashing it in the early hours of Thursday morning
Japanese company Takata (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Takata_Corporation), manufactures 20 per cent of the car industry’s airbags
The company has finally admitted to a US hearing overnight that the number of faulty airbags is much greater than it originally forecast.
The number of affected vehicles has now climbed to a staggering 53 million worldwide, including 34 million in the US alone
The car brands that are affected include Toyota, Honda, Mazda, Nissan, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Lexus, Chrysler, Ford and General Motors
To date, all of the car brands involved in the international recalls so there have been no incidents, injuries or deaths reported in Australia.
However, at least six overseas deaths (http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/05/20/us-autos-takata-recall-idUSKBN0O428E20150520)have so far been linked to the faulty airbags which can spray metal shards if the airbag detonator has been exposed to moisture due to a fault in the manufacturing process.Until now Takata had claimed there was no fault, or that the problems had been fixed in its manufacturing process.
But as recently as November 2014, Takata was accused of destroying evidence (http://www.nytimes.com/2014/11/07/business/airbag-maker-takata-is-said-to-have-conducted-secret-tests.html?_r=0)of internal testing of potentially faulty airbags.
