Many years ago my mate Harry DeSoto persuaded me to see the movie Apocalypse Now, He assured me that it was a true masterpiece and an accurate depiction of what had happened in the Vietnam War. Harry had never set foot in Vietnam and after some arm twisting I watched the film.
Having served 2 tours in Vietnam I concluded that it was fascinating movie making, but had little to do with the war in Vietnam. This was really not surprising. Except for the astute narrative of journalist Michael Herr, the film does not ring true. Don’t get me wrong, it is great movie making but not great story telling. Each little scene is, in itself, a little masterpiece. Herr, who had been in Vietnam, had been brought in to basically make a series of unrelated scenes seem like they formed some sort of coherent story. Unfortunately he failed. Producer/director Francis Ford Coppola overstepped the mark in that he made a film about a war he knew nothing about. Even the source material was not about Vietnam, but was based on Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness which was set in Africa.
Even a superficial viewing of Apocalypse Now revealed its emptiness. The main characters Kilgore, Kurtz and Willard would not have lasted a day in the conflict.
Don’t get me wrong. There were brilliant movie making scenes, but, in the end, it didn’t hang together was a whole.
Why? Coppola fantasized that he had been there. He wasn’t there at all.
Better American films about Vietnam exist. They are B pictures Go Tell the Spartans with Burt Lancaster and The Boys from Company C starring Stan Shaw and Andrew Stevens.
Once again, great scenes, but the whole of Apocalypse Now does not stand up.
How does this related ot Wendy?
