i agree with you there to the max, SHIT FOR GAMING, the only reason why i kept using tpg is coz of the unlimited downloads.
I hope NBN can bring out a plan thats got unlimited downloads but that will never happen after 5-10 years time

Adsl2+ for me with internode, best isp for gaming . been with them for about 4 years.

11 down and 1.5 up, can get as high as 15 down and 1.5 up on a profile.

14 down 1.2 up, I changed back to tesltra about 4 years ago from tpg. Would never go back.
TPG - same court case, ACCC is going to the High Court to overrule, tpg's appeal.

i'm using Telstra 4G

DL: ~20Mbps consistent (peak of 50Mbps)
UL: ~24Mbps consistent (peak of 39Mbps)
Ping: ~40ms average

it craps all over my Telstra adsl.....but apparently i'm 4km from the closest exchange

With any ADSL2+ ISP, your distance from the nearest exchange probably has more influence on your speeds than your ISP.

I am with Exetel, who I think are very good, because you could get unlimited 'no contract' plans including your phone line for $55. (they recently put their price up to $75 for this, but you can still get a 1TB monthly plan with phone line for $60, which should be sufficient for most except for the heaviest downloaders)

However, I provide my views with some caution, because I don't do any gaming, just reasonable amounts of downloading.

I am about 350m from my nearest exchange, and I generally get between 12-15 Mbps DL and 0.7 to 1.2 UL.

My brother is also with Exetel but he is nearly 3000m from the exchange and he only gets 3-4 Mbps DL.

I find them to be very reliable. They mainly use Optus lines for their service unless Optus is not available, then they use Telstra lines.

Their customer service is very good too, much better than any others I have dealt with. (FYI I switched to Exetel about 9 months ago after about 8 years with Telstra)

You can check to see how far you are from your nearest exchange via this link:

http://adsl2exchanges.com.au/detailedsummarystart.php

They give you your distance, both line of sight and cable distance, and they give you 'theoretical' maximum speeds, but actual speeds are usually a fair bit lower.

I have been with Optus cable for over 10 years and currently get speeds similar order of magnitude to wilisno but even then there is variation in the time of day. I have a direct link from the modum to my main PC and another one to a wireless router for my wireless devices.

My results
Hosted by Optus to test from
Download : 17.12
Upload : 0.49
Ping : 18ms

Hosted by Internode to test from
Download : 18.31
Upload : 0.49
Ping : 14ms

I think cable gives more consistent speeds than ADSL variants which is affected by distance from the node as has been stated above.

It should be remembered that the wireless versions currently available in AUS cannot match the speed of a direct connection.

I suggest those interested look at http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum/?action=threads_search&q=speed&f=&fg=-1 which has a lot of info.

Quite slow for Optus. It's definitely the area I live in, I've always had slower internet than others...

Hi Divine,

Did you check how far you were from the exchange? I'm just curious if this is the main cause?

Cheers,

Cato

No NBN has much faster uploads with slightly slower downloads, I'm on Telstra Ultimate Cable.

Sounds like an employee of Telstra at their exchange.

You would be seeing gbps speeds if that were the case!

ps. that's with my tv running which runs off my internet line as well, so it's somewhere around 120++

500gb is plenty of cap, around 16gb per day. With this much you can easily do work and DL plenty of movies :).

Even if they were HD you could still be fine for cap.

I used to be with optus, was with them for 7 years on cable. Was stable but whenever plenty of people were using it the connect went to shit. This is a downside to cable and effects all ISP that use it.

Where as ADSL is more reliable and generally doesn't suffer issues with users being online. Keep in mind a decent connection , stable line and reputable isp make a huge difference. In the end you get what you pay for.

500gbp is heaps if you're not downloading.

I use tpg unlimited adsl 2+. A very reliable service in my suburb, where the exchange isn't completely overloaded by high density housing like the city and surrounding suburbs.

The use philipino outsourced support, but I've found them always useful and pleasant, plus they answer the phone quickly.

thought mine would be quicker - i pay through the roof for this Telstra Cable crap as well :(

http://www.speedtest.net/result/2482907349.png

I don't have a phone line though - so no line rental fee for me, i just piggy back off the foxtel cable connection for my internet.
