I think that is sometimes overlooked; the image, the look, the sexy back up singers, the purple, the costumes.

Yeah pretty sure he played almost all the instruments on his first 4 or 5 albums.
Great songwriter too, wrote plenty of songs for other people too. I heard he regretted giving "Nothing Compares to You" to Sinead O'Connor after it became such a big hit.
