Why the hell does a place with a population of 5 millions does not have night life ? The only day when Sydney stays awake till ,lets say 3 am is on saturday.
I travalled a lot in my life ,and there is no city more boring and lame than Sydney. The only thing that seems to open 24 hours here is McDonalds.
I mean Sydney CBD should at least be active everyday till 2 am ,like any other major city in the world.

Is it mabye because of that boring Anglo Saxon mentality of waking up before the rooster and going to sleep before a grade 2 kid ?

Think other Anglo cities: London, New York, Manchester, New Orleans - plenty of night life there. The problem is Sydney is just plain boring with boring people

That is the first I've heard that it is an anglo saxon thing. You might be right. In any case, I agree. Morning people are boring. On the rare occasion when I have to get up early I see them piously and self-righteously exercising, or walking their dog, or clipping their boring hedges.

Who would want to get out of a warm, snug bed to do that? The early morning is so conservative.

Everything is annoying in the morning ,people ,phone calls ,traffic ,overcrowded public transport .
And mostly those creatures walking their dogs at 6 Am

I agree, Sydney has got to be one of the most boring big cities in the world and it's got nothing to do with lockout laws. Sydney has always been like this.

It seems most of the 5 million population goes to sleep early. I think it just comes down to Sydney not being an international city, it just happens to be as expensive as other international cities.

If you've been to Hong Kong, London, Tokyo, New York and experienced the night life, then Sydney can seem very boring.

Blame Casino Mike, Sydney used to be fun for nocturnal man.

The Casino opens 24 hr !

And there is always the Kingscross !

Of course the casino gets an exemption but Kings Cross is dead these days. Clubs and bars are closing and it's on the fast road to gentrification. Developers are loving it.

i think this is mainly a culture issue and what i found is aussie have generally more relaxed or lazy work attitude, hence few people would work or support late night activities.

one thing the high tax rate at a low income level is definitely not encouraging people to work harder - im talking about highest marginal tax rate at 180k+ if compared to something like 400k+ usd in US for the highest tax rate.

Australia's tax rate is really low compared to the rest of the world though - the US is at the extreme low end of the scale - and look at all the problems they're having because of it. Broken economy, crumbling civic infrastructure, a tiny percentage of super wealthy and the other 99% sliding towards poverty.

Australia has a nice balance there. In any case, not my main point: in Denmark tax on a median income is up around 66% but then they have free education, free medical & dental, no poor people on the street and everything is clean and modern. And they party hard. Across the sea, Sweden has a similar social democracy, but they are super tame compared to the danes.

Point is: tax rate has nothing to do with a country's attitude towards partying.

Hong Kong has very low tax rates, and it was said to have more millionaires than any other countries in the world ! But yes, the gap between the rich and the poor is also very wide, but if there's no gap, it sounds like the old communist China ! ;) ;) ;)

Adelaide sucks ! Couldn't agree more !

But Canberra night life is pretty good !!

I must say, over the years, I have had more FS in Canberra than in all of Sydney !!

And don't forget they had the casino first before Sydney !! There used to be coaches and mini buses lining up around the entertainment centre for free transportation to Canberra !!

Used to drive up to Canberra to gamble and have a fuck !!

Knew the Fyshwick areas pretty well mate !!

Melbourne's night life is way better than Sydney. Heaps of late-opening lane way bars, fantastic Italian quarter in Lygon St, the casino which is way classier than Sydney's.

I have no regret in saying this but we Sydneysiders are not the friendliest people in Australia and this is also noted by many people who visit our city. The attitude of some people who reside in this beautiful harbour city just stinks. You go to other places in the world and the locals greet you with open arms and invite you out. Don't expect it to happen in Sydney.

As for the nightlife, there's no denying that Sydney's lockout laws has had an impact and the main reason for its introduction was to curb the alcohol related violence. It has been claimed that Sydney's CBD lockout laws have reduced the number of violent attacks and injuries, but local businesses are suffering as people head to other areas to enjoy a night out on the town. In any event, having CBD clubs not permit anyone to enter their premises after 1.30am is too harsh on business and patrons. Take for instance Bangkok. You can party all night and early morning and have a great time. I shouldn't forget the girls who like to party too! Every great city must have a nightlife that attracts people to have fun and live it up. Unfortunately, Sydney is a city that sleeps too early.

For your interest, here are the top 10 cities for nightlife in the world:-
1. New York City
2. Las Vegas
3. London
4. Barcelona
5. Berlin
6. Los Angeles
7. Amsterdam
8. Madrid
9. Paris
10. Bangkok

Check it out:-

http://www.wonderslist.com/top-10-cities-for-nightlife-in-the-world/

It appears it's dominated by American and European cities. What happened to the Asian cities? Luckily, Bangkok squeezes in at no 10.

You can always migrate if you don't like the way we are living

Yeah Sydney has no nightlife. Some here say London is good, I call BS on that. It's the same in the UK, or even worse. Major department stores like Harrods never opened in Sundays until about 10 years ago. Can you imagine that? The one day when people are guaranteed to have a day off, and the fricking retail sector decides they need one too.
If you want to blame someone, blame it on the Labour movement. This started from the UK and spread here. To lazy people, it is like a gift from God. The mentality is "if I don't want to work, no one else should work, not even part timers filling in, because then I might lose my job". This mentality is the backbone of all labour unions. Back in the eighties, Margaret Thatcher recognized how destructive these losers are, so she made a huge attempt at forcing them out of the UK. The result is they came here, to Australia! Have a look around, most of them are either Scottish or northern English. And yes, they probably walk their dogs at 6am!
The other idea I've been playing around with is what I call the "Englishman's curse". Through out the history of British colonialism, there's one tactic that the British have used very successfully in order to colonize a country. They introduce substance abuse to the population of the target country in order to soften them up. They sold opium to China, plied the aboriginals of Australia with booze, opium again in Malaya, and so on.
I reckon all that has now come back to haunt their descendants. Alcohol abuse and substance abuse is so widespread now, the authorities have no other choice but to kill the nightlife with lock out laws and other means.

GolfishMan you are absolutely right.Well ,can you then imagine that almost everything in Germany closes on Sundays? Even after a Zombie attack somewhere in Tokyo there would be more life than a sunday in Germany.I am very sure it is related to white peoples buzz mentality. Most peoplein western Europe will call the police on you ,if the TVs sound is at medium level at 10 pm.Actually they are so depressed and sunk in alcohol and drugs abuse that they cant tolerate seeing others being happy and for me nightlife is part of happiness where you are free

In Bangkok you can walk into a convenience store at 3am and buy a bottle of scotch or vodka - that's pretty cool.
Not sure if it will work in Sydney though.
It's city has it's own vibe, rhythm, karma ... you just have to go with the flow of things.

Yes, Sydney doesn't have a good nightlife...restaurants closed before 11pm, hardly any late-night cafes are available and even bars are closed around midnight!

There are various reasons behind it, I agree with it has to do with British heritage... However, you know, Sydney is not so big city compared with other big cities you are thinking of...like NY, Tokyo, Bangkok etc...according to the link below.
http://www.worldatlas.com/citypops.htm

So in world standard, Sydney is a just regional city rather than a world-class city.

I like living in Sydney though with other reasons...there are always pros and cons...

Sydney night life sux balls but I don't reckon it's got anything to do with our British heritage...Aussies are just lazy fucks, end of. i was in London and Manchester recently and both cities had a vibrant night-life with lots to do, less so for manchester but still more alive than Sydney.

HK has a British heritage and it has some of the best night life in the world.

And it seems the lazy ass attitude filters through with so many massage shops closing at 10pm.

Lucky now I only live here 4 to 5 months of the year otherwise I'd go crazy
