I was at the movies this week and saw a preview of an Aussie flick, Careless Love http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQU56DReFoY, which opens next week. It's about a Viet uni student who becomes a WL to support her family. It'll be interesting to see if any of us punters can see similarities between ourselves or other punters and the punters portrayed in the movie!

Second AHlungor on Elly Tran. elly elly elly

BTW that chick in the movie is not that hot. A viet chick call Ada that I did in Alice's is way hotter than her shame she was only there a few weeks. Man time to pay Alan street a visit.

I might catch this, its looks like a character study more than an exploration of the industry.

Good trailer

Aussie accent makes me cringe. Australian films are horrible!

And I have a relative named Mai. Awkward.

The movie was on SBS at the beginning of the year. It was so real about the life of a young Asian WL forced to work to help her family. There was one scene where you really felt sorry for the girl. She was having sex with a customer when his friends surprised her and started taking a video of her. Luckily, they didn't force themselves ono her too. The movie also shows that you can try to hide what you're doing but eventually you will be caught out and someone will expose you as a WL.

There also is a scene when the boyfriend finds out that she is an escort and is really upset. He asks her why not waitressing or bartending? Not long after he tracks down one of her clients and thinks he runs the agency that she works for.
He tells him just before he leaves why she is working this job and that is to save her parents home by helping with the mortgage.

Then you have the main character Linh's monologue at the end of the film

Today the family and marriage with it's faithful union of male and female are still seen as the cornerstones of society. As natural, the norm decreed by nature or god. According to this model prostitution is an act against nature and prostitutes social subversives. Sabotaging the values on which society depends. In short moral outlaws considered by many to be unworthy of protection under the law and treated accordingly. In this paper I want to examine the effect of these values on the attitudes of men and women towards prostitutes, along the way I'll be drawing some of my examples from personal experience.

All WL's you will encounter are just trying to make a living for themselves, most would do something else if there was a more efficient alternative but the fact is there isn't for women. I'm not going to say it isn't hard work as it surely would take it's toll emotionally and mentally.

The fact also remains for men there is little to absolutely no incentive to get married in it's current state. Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free as they say... contraceptives have reduced sex to just a pleasure seeking activity. Even if you wanted kids marriage doesn't guarantee anything but that would be the one argument for getting married.

I watched it last night. Nammi Le was playing a 20 year old uni student and she was convincing at 33 years old! Just goes to show the way asian ladies can stay looking youthful for so long. She is quite pretty and really petitie.

Nammi was a boat person herself - came over at 3 months old on a leaky boat.

The writer director of this film was the same guy who directed Sirens and The year my voice Broke. He saw Nammi Le's work in another low budget aussie film from a few years before and sourced her for this film. It didn't take long for him to develop an eye for her either - and not just through the lens. He was 63 and she 33 playing someone 20 years old, and he promptly shacked up with her, and then married her - the dirty bastard! (Is there an emoticon for "envy" here - ha ha.) She must have a father figure complex. Hey! Nothing wrong with that.

In the film her Thai fellow escort "Mint" was hilarious - what a fun girl. She was great.

The only thing I found annoying about the film is from a wider viewpoint. We have an asian girl as the lead in an Aussie film.....and therefore it has to be about prostitutes.:burn: Why can't we have ABV's and ABC's and ABK's as actresses and leads telling just normal f**king aussie stories. I love mixed culture stories and the asian actresses are easy on the eye.

Haha ! I guess you need a good script to cast an Asian as the leading role in an Aussie film ! Then again, even David Carradine could play the role of an Asian man in Kung Fu, and Yul Brynner as the king of Thailand ! ;) ;) ;)

I think so far only Jet Li and Jacky Chan has been able to star in Hollywood blockbusters in a leading roles.

For females , unless you are ABC such as Lucy Liu, Maggie Q and Kelly Hu, your opportunities will be few and far between. As big a star as Gong Li in Asia, how many Hollywood roles did she get apart from Miami Vice ! And Michelle Yeoh!

Yeah, in the old days, most Eastern characters in Hollywood movies were played by western actors !

55 Days in Peking quickly comes to mind !

Worst case of Western actor playing an Asian would be a tie between Mickey Rooney playing a Japanese guy in Breakfast at Tiffany's and all American dude John Wayne playing Genghis Khan in The Conqueror , and Marlon Brando playing a Japanese guy in The Teahouse of the August Moon (he was a brilliant actor and got away with playing a Sicilian Don Corleone, and an Englishman Christian Fletcher, and a Pole Stanley Kowalski, and a Corsican/Frenchman Napoleon, and even a Kryptonian as Superman's dad - but he sucked at playing an Asian).

Har Har! - Brother Rooter - you bring back a bad memory. I saw Breakfast at Tiffanys for the first time recently and Mickey Rooney was just a caricature. John Wayne drawling as Genghis Khan though - that sounds hilarious! :shout:

But encouraging News Flash! There is an aussie ABC girl playing a leading role in the New Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon film. :miao:
