You are right in pointing out the lady artists who did play a male characters in movies and plays - most of them in Cantonese style !

On the other hand , in the very much art house and traditional Peking Opera style, it was the male Artists who portrayed a female character and indeed better or should I say had achieved a much higher echelons than a female leads !

Not sure if any older Chinese brothers here even know of 梅蘭芳主唱霸王別姬！

Mr Mei was definitely one of a kind. BTW during the WWII when most of China were occupied by the Japanese army, he refused to perform for the Japs and grew a beard , so he can’t play a female role any more . Very highly respected by both the Communist and Taiwanese governments!

Same went with early opera and theatrical performance, women weren't generally allowed to perform, so were portrayed by men. Some operas still do use men as female characters as a homage to the times... Also because it was overplayed in to comedy at the time...
