View Full Version : General talk Anyone missing their sports?

Coronavirus has crippled most sports around the world and let's admit it, we do miss our favourite sports. However, when these sports are requesting bailouts from the government due to funding running out from television media coverage by media companies like Foxtel, it begs to ask the question where have the millions gone? Should fans feel sorry for the CEOs, officials and players in various sports such as AFL, cricket and rugby league when they have been receiving large sums of money? Surely not! It's time for them to tighten their belts like everyone else out there. On the other hand, it's good to hear some players are going out to find some 'real' jobs like concreting or painting. It might make them realise that they need to have a backup plan during desperate times.

For those who are keen soccer (or football) fans, there's one soccer premier league that is still playing and keeping the fans entertained. It's the Belarussian Premier League. It's still continuing despite the ongoing virus pandemic with its President downplaying the threat of the virus in his country. There are also three other countries in the world including Burundi, Tajikistan and Nicaragua where the game is still being played. With no other soccer being played elsewhere, the Belarussian Premier League competition and clubs are gaining much interest from fans worldwide. Any keen soccer fans out there taking an interest in this competition?

Me too! It is fucking killing me not being able to watch the footy. I live for Origin and cannot stand the thought of not seeing the mighty Queenslanders in action.

May 28 is the planned date for the resumption of the rugby league competition. Seriously do the NRL bosses and Wayne Pearce believe the game will be up and running when there is social distancing, travel bans and no physical contact allowed? The various state governments have not even been consulted about the start up.

The NRL certainly didn’t consider the health minister in discussions. Surely if they consulted his staff he would’ve heard about it.
The NRL is out of control & need to be pulled into line. I’d love too see it back but c’mon this can’t happen yet. So what if the season runs to December & starts in July like the AFL looks like doing. It’s probably a long shot but crowds could be back by the finals especially if it’s December. As for Origin the game would survive without it for one year to fit more games in if it starts in July or August.

It is a dying sport and they are are grasping at what they can.

The NRL head office has been draining the game of millions and it's no wonder they're desperate to get the game started. Now the Deputy Chief Medical Adviser in NSW has stated that the NRL must seek permission before commencing.

Sport is an integral part of Australian culture and forms a key element of current Australian life. Aussies love their sports whether it be at the Olympics, soccer world cup, the cricket or rugby. With sport comes our thirst for drinking and mateship and there is no denying that Aussies love to drink during games. Despite a serious pandemic affecting our lives, many sports fan need their fix (see their sports) or they will go crazy.

Here in NYC... missing the MLB starting up. This was going to be the Yankees year with Cole and hopefully no injury plaguing the team.

Not to worry though, more important things in life.

The masters going to be rescheduled to November.

NBA will be on the front foot of returning as soon as feasible. I think Australia will be fine in the medium term... currently playing it safe due to the horrible outcome in Italy, Spain and UK. Australia can weather this appropriately, and the handful of cases that emerge in the near term can be managed by the great healthcare system back home.

The crowd issues won’t impact Roosters games that’s for sure ;). Nor Sheffield Shield - start it up!

Its not about us. Its all about the money.... ScoMo and that wanker of Vic call Daniel Andrews held several meeting before calling off the F1, arguable the biggest pot lose in the sports opening season of Australia given most of the team already there., thanks to Wuhan Pneumonia. Logistics, advertising, tickets....etc all gone down the drain and you can't postpone it or rearrange it like NRL or AFL.

Then there is the usual Aussie favorite Like NRL, AFL, Racing... Huge money invest in these events. Funny the politics and the influential is so evidential, with the AFL has the least bargaining power while Racing is allow to keep going. Again money talks.....

I wonder what is going to happen to all the major European soccer league..... that is the biggest mystery for now.

Players are currently taking pay cuts in all sports. I wonder what happens medium-long term, just can’t see how current player contracts are financially viable for sports on the verge of bankruptcy.

Will professional players have a longer term pay cut or contract re-negotiation?

Thinking about how the cricketers played hard-ball Cricket Australia not that long ago.

Totally agree, I think many are over paid and need to take a permanent pay cut to save their sport

Channel 9 slammed NRL for financial mismanagement, but even this article surprised me about the number of staff at NRL...

‘Sydney Morning Herald sports editor Chris Barrett reported the NRL now employs about 400 people and compared it to the English Premier League head office which has only 140 staff’

All I want to see was the 12 years where NSW was simply no match to all the future Queensland immortals: just like when Ray Warren had called so many times like a broken record- Smith to Lockyer to Thurston to Slater to Inglis to Boyd who scored in the corner untouched !!

My thoughts on this (no one is asking, I know :) )

Spoilers below if you haven’t watched it, so please do not read the following if you care.

1. Overall propaganda for the Australian team to make them seem like “good blokes” and that we’ve gotten over the disgraceful ball tampering. It’s fine, just know what it is.
2. Agree that team meetings and the like are very interesting, though what are they holding back at some points for the camera that is obviously there.
3. Steve Smith seems very weird... good for the team he is no longer captain, and shouldn’t be again. Strange man and don’t think he has the charisma and nous to captain again.
4. Warner - I don’t think the team really like him (surprise). While the others seem to get on well on tour (cards, playing around), i don’t know if that is the case for warner. Polarising guy, sure... but interesting.
5. They barely address the ball-tampering saga... 5 minutes up front in Episode 1, then nothing. Would have been some good opportunities for introspection with Smith, Warner, Bannedcroft, Lehman even.
6. Langer has anger management problems.
7. Don’t think langer is a very good coach whatsoever. Outsourced the ODI preparations to Punter, and the Ashes preparations to Tugga (everywhere else they lost...)
8. The narratives are too obvious sometimes, and they don’t show enough of what happened in the games. i.e., Usman Khawaja’s tour of India and UAE dominated leading up to selection in the CWC team... but that got no mention and it was all about Finch scratching around back into some form.
9. Did not address key selection decisions (Khawaja dropped in ashes, for example) and others
10. In the team meetings early on, Khawaja was the only one with the guts to stand up to Langer on behalf of the team (Langer noted he was a fan of him, but whatever). What was with that idea of changing the team around in the nets when one person got out... ludicrous!
11. That Stokes innings in the Ashes was incredible. Some bad captaincy, for sure... that DRS call, and they should have never gotten that close.
12. They barely showed Test 5.... as it didn’t fit with the fun story conclusion, “we have everyone’s respect back”

Interested in your thoughts, Sabotage? It was a fun series, but part of me wanted to see more cricket, analysis, performance and a little less about Zampa making coffee and Zampa/Stoinis kissing each other ;)

Yes, I am an Usman fanboi and always have been. Tremendous batsman, who never got the support of the establishment for a long enough period of time.

This upcoming summer is going to be like Shield Cricket, or the tours to the UAE... no crowds!

Good analysis, agree with most of your points. No doubt final edit done by CA.

It could have been done better. I admit when I watch something now, I just take it for what it is. Use up my brain power during the week.

Enjoyed Uzzie giving it back Langer. Smudge is certainly a weird one and he should donate his brain to science. Warner is quite simply a fuckwit and is now confirmed. Agree with Zampa/Stoinis, was funny to start but their homoerotic humour is now just embarrassing.

I did not mind the theory of changing nets if you get out. At the time Australia had many batting collapses and they were batting like everything was a T20.

Anyway, hoping the Australian cricket summer can happen in some capacity. Really makes me regret not getting off my arse and going to every SCG game last summer.

This whole crisis makes you appreciate the little thing in life. Just having a few beers at the pub seems like the best thing in the world right now

The NRL is starting up on May 28 after receiving the go ahead from the Federal Government. It has been decided that the matches will be played in NSW. What's weird is that the players will be playing to an empty stadium. The lack of atmosphere raises concerns about how motivated the players would be. With the NRL pushing ahead with the resumption of its competition, won't the AFL follow suit?

cuteguy
19-05-2020, 12:11 PM
The AFL has made it clear to its players that they should not engage in one night stands or casual flings that might expose them and their team colleagues to the virus. I guess some players won't be deterred by such direction when they have many fans chasing them. Was there a similar direction from NRL to its players?

They don't need to go to clubs or bars to pick up girls. There are girls chasing them and if the girls spot them in some public places do you think the girls won't approach them? Sure they will and so will these sports stars if they see some beautiful giris. Many girls want to go out and date these sports stars and latee post on social media to show off that they were with sports stars.
