I think I have posted this before elsewhere but can't find it. There are places in Seoul where an entire building is occupied fully by various styles and forms of massage shops and brothels, that is every unit on every floor !! Some are actually legit, some everything goes, and some are specialised with Japanese, Chinese, Thai and Vietnamese girls etc.

There are a lot a misconceptions about korean girls in this forum; it seems like someone believes most of pretty girls are WLs in Korea or Sydney
Prostitution in Korea is ILLEGAL, it is tolerated but girls working in the industry are not well accepted by the society; this is the reason why some young k-girls come to Sydney so they can make some money while learning english
Korea has opened up a lot in the past 20 years but traditions are very deep embedded in korean culture; imagine that girls do not smoke in the street because they fear to be scolded by older man..i saw a man slapping in the face a teenager because she was openly smoking in the street
Prostitution is Korea is mostly for korean only (or asian only) and most of the girls are Thai, philipinos, vietnamese.... korean girls are not likely to accept caucasian customers.
If you are young and good looking it is far easier to pickup a pretty korean girl in a club or pub or even a cafe, that go to prostitutes

There are quite a few such establishments in Sydney, commonly in the CBD and inner city areas, but it's a massive massive advantage to be Korean. I was casting around for the overall poor reputation of Koreans in Sydney, and maybe assumed too much. Could it be summed up as an overall lack of the gfe / pse that Ginza specialises in?

As mentioned above, the Adult Industry is booming. Ironically (or, "as usual" depending on your perspective), the industry exploded after the Sex Trade Prohibition Special Act of 2004 came into effect. Sex trade has taken on many different forms (e.g., Aqua/Style's BBBJ Bar) since then, let alone the quantity.
Many girls also work individually through online/mobile phone hookups although it is quite a dangerous practice.
Hence, to answer the main Q:
1) K-WLs may go back go Kor with the money they've earned, get a hymen reconstruction surgery and look to get married and a become housewife.
-> A K-WL I know (a friend's friend) bought a house back home with no mortgage whatsoever - this was after 12~18 months of working as a WL. Still working in Perth.
=> 1-1) ex-K-WLs may not necessarily get married (at least not look to do so straight away), but "live on"-making investments, opening a small business or what not, based on the funds they raised here.
2) Some may join the sex trade again upon returning home. (Heck, they have the "experience".)
3) Re-commence their studies - although not a high likelihood. - would take forever to go through the process of graduating, getting a job and earn the same money they did when they were WLs-hard to return to a lower income lifestyle after becoming an ex-WL.

The part I don't understand is how they explain their wealth to their friends who don't know their history. When one goes overseas for 2 or 3 years and suddenly comes back being able to afford a house without mortgage, wouldn't it still be easy to figure out what happened during these years?

Some valid points above. Let's see if I can explain:-
WLs' social circles become quite limited or on dimensional. Furthermore you would be surprised the type of images that Korean girls (WLs or not) can put on with makeup, surgery, lies or what not. A WL I met in Korea had a different job altogether and in another city (she was part-time). She had the image of a very sexual person, but not necessarily that of a WL. Most Korean men are cooped up in classrooms throughout their teen years and lose the opportunity to gain perspective and such of the "real/outer world"-they can easily become prey.
Also, as I said above, their past does surface usually at some point. A WL I met in Korea had a different day job altogether and in another city (she was part-time). She had the image of a very sexual person, but not necessarily that of a WL.
I also have to point out that one's Aussie background and perspective of life is seen your responses. One thing I love about OZ life is that there is a very wise "grey" area of life. You may be on with wealth or perhaps someone who barley gets by everyday. But the option of living mid-class life exists-in the sense that you have a decent job w/ decent pay, able to make rent and some savings on the side + enjoy a vacay here and there + no worrying about your kids' education. A great portion of society enjoys this option.
In Korea, the mid-class is disappearing. It's economic aristocracy. The have nots feeding the haves. In that scenario, do you really think the perspective of others/friends have as much weight? Sad reality is-capital trumps all. If it was a girl that didn't endorse this POV...probably wouldn't be a WL in the first place.
JayW: The princess syndrome has more to do with a sociological aspect that I would probably have to write a 1~2K essay on or maybe even give a lecture on (and I have to point out that that is be a different Q altogether). But in short, the most essential aspect is the fact that reverse sexism is a running theme of the 2000s and these early 2010s. This leads to K-girls thinking they have a right to receive above and beyond "normal" treatment, yet argue equality and that men are sexists when males criticize this behavior. That's a very shallow explanation. But I hope that gives something at least.
