Sounds like the history of the car industry in Australia.
Locally made Holdens, Falcons and Valiants, clunky, no extras, and overpriced but protected from imports by tariffs and quotas.
Then the protectionist wall was removed and consumers realised they could get an economical, fuel efficient, little Japanese import with all the extras thrown in and for only a fraction of the price.
And the rest is history.
I do like some of those old Holdens, Falcons and Valiants though ... "Hey Charger!"
