So far I found QVB Hotel is in Day use and their rates are competitive. Oaks, APX apartment near Darling Harbour are reasonable and below $150.
Holiday Inn Potts Point have very flexible day use rates and go upto 11pm.
Then there is Quest as well as MGSM executive accomodation in Macquarie Park which is reasonable.

Most hotels that are not in the CBD will be open to options. You need to be smart about how you ask. I don’t do a ring around, but will usually do a walk-in when I am in the area and I am in a suit and looking presentable. Then I’ll ask if they are open to providing access to a room when I am in the neighborhood and looking for somewhere to work in the afternoon. I’ve not found many who are not open to negotiating.
