Assuming you actually like the girl, the perfect place for a first date is at a baseball game. probably difficult to do in Sydney, but there's usually lot of interesting things to see, do, and eat around the ball park. During the game, the girl is more than likely clueless about the game so then it gives you guys more chance to talk and get to know each other.
Sometimes an activity is good so you both don't feel you have to make conversation all the time. Activities such as bowling, visiting zoos/museums and video arcades are good.
