yea a marketplace is always difficult than normal business, so it'd be very difficult.

so they didn't actually build anything, it's a simple WordPress template then they customise and enter content.
There are plenty of WordPress templates for dating sites actually.
I've also thought if my site doesn't work out well and can't get traction, the original idea will change and the site may become something else completely. If that still doesn't work then I'll let it run on autopilot as free services for users. That's what I did previously for my last website.
at the beginning, girls don't need to pay because getting girls to join is harder so we'll need to give them incentives to join. I think many other dating sites follow the same approach. I know they have some premium features later on added for girls.

I think the competition isn't other sugar sites, it's only fans and tiktok. your failed marketplace could be more hinderance than helper.
