Problem with backpage is you never know if the pics are real, if the services are good or if the ads are traps just like Craigslist when they used to allow advertisements on adult services. The only good thing is that the info is free.

I've been to San Francisco quite a few times (used to live in Southern California), so a little local intel, though somewhat outdated as it's been a few years.

First of all: "Let's be careful out there!"
Even though San Francisco is one of the most (if not the most) liberal places in US and often a blind eye is the way to go for the officials,
let's remember that prostitution is still illegal in California .

America is a big country. Different states have different laws in regards to prostitution.
In some states it is an offence to sell, in some to buy, in some both.
And then if you go to for example Nevada, there are licensed brothels.
And what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas (strictly speaking prostitution is illegal in Vegas as it's up to the city to decide in Nevada), but the local law enforcement there is aware of the laws of physics (strippers/hookers bring dough to the city = they have job).


Anyhow, back to San Francisco - FYI: most people in California (not from SFO) call it Frisco. Do not make that mistake = you are considered outsider.

There are a number of massage places / saunas close to Chinatown / Union square, and only about 10% of them are legit.
Local papers, yellow pages (phone book) and internet provide options, but you never know what you get (80% of the time it's been nice and pretty though).
I've also been solicited on the street, but don't go there, most of them are druggies and you never know what you catch.

The first time I went there (this was back in late 90's) I asked the bell boy in the hotel (I was staying in the Ramada plaza on Market St) if he knew anyone who'd be interested to join me for dinner.
He asked what I was looking for and as I answered: "Someone I can have a conversation with, a Uni student or like".
He said: "Leave it me, I'll get back to you".
30 minutes later he knocks on the room door and tells me that my date will meet me at the lobby bar at 7pm. Just come down and he'll introduce us.
7pm sharp I'm down at the lobby and he directs me to the table where a 24 yo Latina girl is sitting - absolutely beautiful (think JLo) and she really was a uni girl.
The cost for initial night was not cheap ($1000 + $200 for the bell boy), but as we clicked she ended up spending the week with me with no additional cost and we hooked up on my later visits to SF as well. I would have married her, but no, circumstances draw us apart.
