Sorry for the rant but this topic struck a chord with me
Great post Sydman, you'd have to be the first guy I've ever heard of that was better off financially AFTER discovering Patts, well done!!

I agree with that bit about stopping completely, not that I've ever been a big gambler or punter, but if you need to stop it completely then it still rules your life to some extent and you're likely to be just as unhappy as when you were losing.

Everything in moderation, folks, that's the key.

    Gotta love the last line~!!

The lure of gambling is you will "get something for nothing". The reality is you will probably lose your money and get stress, anger, and disappointment in return.

So punting seems like the wiser decision.

If you are going to gamble treat it as an investment and not recreation - if you want recreation then spend your money on sex, dining out, the movies, night clubs etc.
    Same basic rules when gambling:
    1.Don't gamble for fun
    2. Don't gamble when drunk
    3. Don't gamble with friends
    4. Avoid games of chance eg pokies, roulette - you will ALWAYS LOSE in the long run
    5. Stick to games that involve skill - if you are good at poker or blackjack then you have a chance.
    6. Stick to sports betting and :
    - stick to sports you understand - do your research.
    - stick to simple outcomes like win/lose/draw (that way you have a 1/2 or 1/3 chance)
    - avoid exotics, multis, exact score etc or just put very small amounts on them
    - don't be lured by "generous odds", back what you actually expect to win; bookies give generous odds because its almost certain it won't happen.
    - don't try and make big money quickly, but rather just regular small winnings - treat it as a regular income stream rather than a windfall win
    - as you start to make money increase the size of your bets but always on short odds or favourites (short odds are offfered for good reason) - NEVER bet big money on a long shot!

These tips are no guarantee - it's gambling after all.

The best advice is still probably the boring advice your mum gave you which is to put the money aside in the bank every week - it's slow and boring but its a guaranteed result.
Then spend your savings on hookers! - that's probably not your mum's advice, but hey, you gotta have fun!
I agree, I reckon there is one more rule though, the golden rule:
    7. Don't double your bets to recoup your losses.

yeah LLD bro, happened to me last week. had a $110 FS punt which was fantastic. Was a bit high afterwards so walked into the pub across the road and lost 100 on the pokies trying to win back the money i spent on punting...so my punt ended up being $210 :/

I consider it a blessing that Gambling is one 'vice' I never understood at all. (and I've had a LOT of vices) It just gives me no pleasure - I don't see the appeal or any fun in it at all, you know that in the long run you come out behind. Wouldn't you rather sink that lost money into more punts? But I respect that others do enjoy gambling, to each their own! But Punting all the way for me

    Poontang,
Pattaya can be a money pit. Its so cheap in some ways but its a town of excess's.
You can find good accommodation for under $45 a night, food is dirt cheap if you like thai food and booze is relatively cheap. What gets me is the lady drinks. The drunker I get, the more generous I get. I end up with 3 or 4 girls plus the mamasan at my table and my tab grows much quicker than expected!!

When I go for 3 weeks I only go to pattaya for the last 7-10 days. In other towns I find a bargirl or massage lady in her late 20's to mid 30's that is happy to spend a few days with me and I visit the tourist sites in the area. Works out way cheaper and you actually get to see stuff apart from the inside of a bar.

Once I hit pattaya its pretty much just drinking and sex. Next trip I have to try devils den I've tried to get there a few times but get distracted on the way.

Not sure if the new 6 Star Crown will be open for the general public ??

It was meant to be for the high rollers only, may be minimum hand at $1,000 - that would keep me out!

Just wondering how they can keep the mobs out if they just wonder in for a look see !!

    Cheers

The typical Japanese salary man can relate to this thread. Usually the wife has him by the balls and he has a daily $20 stipend. So take 15 of these poor bastards hitting pachinko nightly, odds are 14 will do their dough but one lucky dude gets a punt that night.

Sadly, I’ve fallen victim to the gambling addiction, and it isn’t good. I know I need to stop, but currently I feel it’s a vice for deeper things, my elders have a hoarding issue which isnt pleasant, I’ve tried for years to assist the situation and have given up trying to the extent of what’s the point in saving my money.

It sounds dumb, I’m trying to better myself as of recently by putting a limit on, realistically I should just go cold turkey and delete the account and put everything into focus on running for upcoming events, distances you would think are not possible, not quite 730km like someone ran recently, just 100km, Which would be 1000% better, and also start paying off excessive debts.

With tax time around the corner it should put my brain in a much better situation. I got this. I hope.

Yep. It’s a rinse repeat cycle. You either go in , win then lose. Or lose straight away

Then you decide to drown yourself with alcohol, and/or other substances then think it’s a good idea to go have a punt to lift your spirits. It’s good at the time, but feel much worse otherwise

Talking about gambling, i use to see this young viet ml from a city rnt shop pre-covid and one evening i was her last customer and she asked me if i wanted to join her at the casino to gamble for a bit, had nothing else on so joined her.

Once we arrived at the casino she went straight for the blackjack table and within 15 min she had dropped $5k.

I was worried she was going to ask me for cash but she pulled out another wads if cash about $10k from her handbag and changed the whole lot over to chips. In the next hour it was up and down with wins and loses but she ended up leaving $5k up.

She ask me to join her back at her place, she lives in an apartment close to the city.

We grabbed a cab back to her place and she tells me on the way back that she at one stage early in her gambling life won $25k on the tables and a grand jackpot on the pokies which got her hooked and about a year later she lost that much money that she ended up working at a brothel in Pyrmont & Surry Hills to earn more money.

I Stopped seeing her but my mate who also was seeing her told me she left the industry during Covid and now she is back working doing private nuru massage/FS from an apartment around the city/surry hills area.

I guess once your hooked you'll always be hooked.

    Good advice!
    Yes, definitely punting over gambling.

Outside of a nice meal with your partner and/or family punting over everything !!

What does a discretionary 200-300 spend get you these days ?

There are only 2 types of Pokie players
    1. Losers
    2. Liars

The only winners from poker machines are the venue and the government taxing it
