I think I have posted enough reviews to be able to ask something completely off topic.
I have a job offer from another company with people I know a bit through networking etc. If I approach my current employer what would be the best way to go for a pay increase. Would I be better off:
A. Approaching them and saying these are the market rates, it's time for a review and not revealing the other offer up front
B. Just straight out saying I have another offer, either increase your offer or I will consider my future
C. Tell them about the other offer and see what the reaction is without pressing them too hard
Some of the context is and I know this will sound arrogant but they will struggle for a while to replace me as there are a couple of projects which I am leading and no one else has the specialised skills or experience that I have and there will be some serious butt kicking if the projects aren't finished on time and budget so in some ways I have them by the balls but I don't know if I should squeeze them and take advantage or not. I think I have given them more than fair service whilst working for them and don't want to burn the bridges either.
There must have been other guys here in the same situation. What did you do and how much success did you have?

Definitely A, if you like your workplace and the people there. B is outright antagonistic. C I've read that an employer will doubt your energy and commitment to the company and maybe ease you out some time in the future at a time not of your choosing.
Depending on the response to A, you will still have the other offer to take up. But do your research first about the other company and the vibe there.
I don't think anyone minds helping with advice here, reviews or not.

I have been in very similar position like that on many occasions in my younger years and most of the times I valued loyalty and friendship and neither did I make a move for greener postures nor i capitalized on the situation and fight for better deal with the current employers !!
And so many times I saw lesser qualified people getting those new appointments and did really well in the industry while I was struck in my old job earn my same old pay !!
First of all, is the new offer genuine in terms of pay package, company growth and job security ? And most importantly, will you be happy in that new job? Is you offer a firm offer, have you got a contract ?
If yes to all of the above but you still like you current job and the company but wish they would pay you what you really worth , then you should make an appointment with your boss, and be honest with him/her, no need to beat around the bush, tell him straight out that you have been head hunted or approached (this is important , never say you are not happy where you are and you were looking !) and it's a very hard decision for you because you love your job and the company and the people especially your boss and all those BS, but the offer is so good that you have to consider, so you are seeking some advice from the boss if there is anything he and the company can do to help you make a decision to stay !!
Hopefully they can come back with a pay rise to your satisfaction so that you can stay and complete your project ! BTW, if they make you an offer to stay, take a pay rise or any other immediate benefits such as company car and stuff like that , an increase of your year end bonus is not a good option under the circumstances as it may or may not come. And you dont want them tk use thr bonus as a carrot to keep you staying until you finished all the outstanding projects!
Once your salary is increased, all your other benefits will be increased accordingly !

Please also keep in mind that with regard to some bosses, they tend to think that u are 'looking'. They may agree to put u onto the increased sal, but once the project finishes, would be inclined to replace you with a cheaper alternative especially if their margins are under pressure.
I don't have an answer. But I do have a question. Just say your boss did give u the rise u were looking for..does that mean in future you are not allowed to ask for another rise or if u can how many years can u ask for another big rise again ? Surely u can't keep asking.for it a few times
Jump ships if you want to keep going up. Loyalty doesn't always pay bills ! In fact, if you're getting too important, you might become a threat to your boss and it won't be a happy environment to work in !

My advise is to be up front with them sit down quietly and put your case for an increase, have an amount in mind and let them know why you thing the rise is warranted.
If your happy working where you are I would just keep the other offer up my sleeve, and know I have a plan B if necessary.
Depending on how the offer and the conversation goes you may need to say you are not happy you like working where you are but would have to consider looking elsewhere if the money was not up to expectation.
If you like it where you are working you need to be firm friendly and put your case.

Agree with Sextus. Don't go with option C. It will not do you any good in the long run, either at your firm or within the industry if it's a close knit one.
Do you get bonuses for getting your projects over the line and on budget? Do you enjoy where you work otherwise? There are a lot of things to consider.
While your negotiating a raise also ask for 6 monthly salary reviews, sets the framework and opens the door for future negotiations.
I did my reasearch in this position and the current market offer this $$$$ .Simple!
Not sure what industry u are in but just generally, if u have specialised skills that the company requires, it should be in their interests to motivate and maintain u as a employee.
Not sure if I would remain in a company that undervalues my current skill set, yet alone my future potential.

I actually got a promotion by using option 3. I simply said to my boss that i might be interested getting another job on the side (in short, having a part time job for fun). Then the next week, he did come up with an offer for a promotion.. Lol.. Even though i did want to stay in the company, but i just needed some extra cash on the side. Glad how it turned up to be.

I've been working for along time.
Just resign and move on if you are interested in the other $, Job, Company.
If you are outperforming and vital, your boss would've realized by now and would've given you your pay rises or bonus.
If you resign and they say, we would like to keep you and offer you more, then you have a choice.
But if the company doesnt reward you, you ask for a pay rise and get it, you will be in the same boat in a few years time..
THey don't change their habits.
Furthermore, don't burn your bridges. It will always haunt you in the end. Resigning and saying that you want to broaden your horizon will not burn your bridges.
A move also increases your network of people for future growth.
