Brisbane duo charged with unlawful prostitution

A Brisbane man and woman have been charged with unlawful prostitution after allegedly running an illegal syndicate out of motels.

A 65-year-old man and a 57-year-old woman were arrested in Brisbane on November 29 following a two-year operation into illegal prostitution activities in Mackay, Rockhampton, Toowoomba and Brisbane.

Police also seized $36,000.

Both were charged with four counts of carrying on the business of unlawful prostitution and will appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on December 18.

Twenty-five people have also been charged with unlawful prostitution offences.

The operation involved detectives from the Crime and Intelligence Command’s Prostitution Enforcement Taskforce, and Major and Organised Crime Squad Regional with assistance from AFP and the Australian Border Force.

Detective acting Inspector Brad Phelps said this was a significant outcome.

“Illegal operators not only put the health and safety of their workers and customers at risk, they are profiting from illegal activity and we will continue to hold them to account,” he said.

Trio charged with running a brothel out of a Sunshine Coast motel

Three women have been charged with running an illegal brothel out of a south-east Queensland motel.

The Chinese nationals, aged 52, 46 and 33, were allegedly involved in selling sex out of a Mooloolaba motel.

Police arrested the women at the motel "in the vicinity of Brisbane Road" and claim to have seized $10,000 in cash during their raid.

There are two legal forms of sex work in Queensland: that conducted in a licensed brothel, from which callouts are prohibited, and sole operators who work privately.

Escort agencies, unlicensed brothels, massage parlours, street workers and two or more sex workers operating from a single premises are considered illegal.

Queensland has 20 licensed and operating brothels: 12 in Brisbane, five on the Gold Coast, one on the Sunshine Coast, one in Toowoomba, and one in Cairns.

Two of the women – those aged 46 and 33 – were charged with participating in the provision of unlawful prostitution and possession of tainted property.

The 52-year-old was charged with carrying on the business of providing unlawful prostitution, having an interest in premises used for prostitution, and two counts each of knowingly participating in the provision of prostitution and possession of tainted property.

The three women were set to appear in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Sunday afternoon.
