Yes, you are right in that it is opposite. Darkness on the Edge of Town came out 3 years after Born to Run. And it had Springsteen at 29. He obviously had won and lost in he's own life by then. So it was a lot more broken than earlier works. Anyway, we are reading to much into the comment. The 3rd verse of the song screams that I will be on that hill with everything that I've got.
