Anyone here into watches? What do you wear and what's in your collection?
I'm starting to get into the looks of some of them, especially Tag, but I just can't bring myself to spend thousands on something that just tells the time.
Do you think a man should have at least one decent watch in his repertoire?

I have a Tag Heuer Carrera 44mm, I love it, yes there are nicer watches out. I believe a man should have a quality time piece if you have the money for it they can be a good investment also depending what brand you purchase etc.

Hard, almost impossible to buy certain top end brands new. The manufacturers use the covid excuse. Consequently prices second hand are higher than new pricing.
New $52k but cannot get, sec hand $56k and a year old. This sort of thing.
Chrono24.com is a decent site to go looking.

A couple of lesbian friends gave me a gold timepiece. They misunderstood when I said, "I wanna watch."

If you just want a great watch without breaking the budget, look into Seiko watches, they are durable and fashionable at the same time,
My daily is a Tag Heuer Connected Titanium E4,

i bought a mechanical watch in japan (orient star) about 10 years ago for about $400 ... still goes strong now and looks elegant!
i joined the digital fad with fitbits and garmins etc but recently ditched them for classic watches again

Myself, I like my Swiss watch, Casio Data Bank. Not Swiss you say? Wrong, bought it in Zurich. Of course, the Swiss girl I was talking to in the bar, she bragging everything in Switzerland was fantastic, didn't think it was a Swiss watch and couldn't see the humor, but Swiss are not exactly known for their sense of humor. Just get a pick and yodel...

Have some, going to buy more. One of the trends is getting your watch “blacked out”. Looks nice.

I'm not a collector but I do appreciate a good mechanical watch. I like the feeling of wearing the craftsmanship on my wrist. Been wearing my Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra for 15 years now. Had to get it serviced last year though.
I got it because it's a chronometer, so time keeping is as accurate as it gets for a mechanical watch. Plus the movement is completely in-house built by Omega, not using a third party mass produced movement like the ETA ones.
A couple of lesbian friends gave me a gold timepiece. They misunderstood when I said, "I wanna watch."
Haha, nice.

Very good. 🙂
I have a Tag Link from years ago, but never wear it these days as I can't live without my Garmin. I was very tempted by a Panerai Luminor Marina Carbotech, but don't think I'd get the use out of it to justify the cost.

I have a few watches, nothing too flash, but really only wear my fitbit these days because of gym, sleep cycle etc. So I have a TAG Formula 1, a Masersti Traguardo, a Nike Triax, a Casio ProTrek all lying around doing nothing.
I do love watches but it's a shame we can only wear one at a time. So I've only got a Longines master collection. Think the item code is L2.759.4.78.3
If I was going to get another one then I'd go for something sporty maybe a bit out there. The Breitling Superocean watches look quite bold and sporty.
My other hand I've got my fitbit which I'm addicted to. Check it every 3 minutes when I'm at the gym to see what my heartrate is lol.

Yeah that's the thing with watches. You can only wear one at a time. That makes owning more than 1 mechanical watch a real pain because they will lose power and stop after 2-3 days of non-use. You'd then have to set the time and date again the next time you want to wear it.
Either that or get automatic watch winders but they're a hassle to use, take up space and you could easily forget about wearing that watch again, lol.

Yeah, my fetish are Omega watches. I have a Speedmaster Pro and Aqua Terra, both mechanical and with the proper movements which are sought after.

You can't think of a luxury watch as a convenience. Just like an older Lambo or Ferrari, the engine warm up time is like 10 minutes, and then you have to drive carefully by skipping certain gears until the gearbox is warm too. Luxury goods are all about status, never about convenience.

Got a couple of Rado & Panerai watches that I rotate & wear every few months. Simple design without being over the top.
My daily drivers are a couple of Seiko's, good solid watches.
Can't get into those fitbit style watches, I just want to know what the time is FFS. Heh.

I just have a cheap $40 watch that's water resistant to 100 metres so I can go to the beach or pool with it or on holiday and don't want to carry my phone around..
The rest of the time I don't wear a watch, I just use my phone to check the time.
Cheap watches do the job and if you lose them or smash them it's no big deal, and if you are travelling they don't attract muggers.
Walking around in a Third World country wearing a Rolex is just asking to be mugged.

I used to wear very expensive watches to work till I started damaging them. Being a hands on man you sometimes forget what you’re wearing or don’t think it’ll happen to you.
Two of my mates wore similar. Till one arced a welder across his. You can imagine him trying to get off a molten hot stainless band. I heard his screams and came running but how does one grab it?
The other when working on his car arced across his watch band with a shifting spanner and the car battery.
Both have permanent watch scars now on their wrists.
So now I never wear anything nice or metallic if I have to do work of any kind.
Only when going out.

One time I was I HK looking for a watch but the department store only had boring cheapies. I asked where the good watches were, and they sent me to the specialist shop next door. The watches there definitely looked better but had no prices. I asked the salesman for the price of one I liked, and they told me it was in the USD $25k ballpark. Er, no thanks.

Hahah, that was probably a dud, but it was a bad idea to wear any watch in the shower. I wouldn't do it even with a Rolex Submariner.
The problem with a hot shower is the water is hot and moving. Hot water makes the metal and gaskets expand and contract, and moving water increases pressure on the seals in a random, non-uniform way. These watches weren't designed to be put under those conditions. Take them with you deep underwater if you want, just not into a shower.

Have several watches but my favourite is the Cartier Ballon Blue, a Christmas present from WL I regularly see. She bought me this because I told her that I saw her wearing one when I first met her and that caught my attention. She said she bought me the watch so I wont forget her. She's not working anymore and went back to her country but still in contact her from time to time.

Any good shops in HK that have stock?
A lot of high end brands don’t. They put you on a waiting list. I’ve been on one for a year.
It’s BS and we are only talking about a piece of metal. Very frustrating.

Omg i love the aqua terra! Also love the one with the whole atlas embedded in it whats its name?
My preference is still the GMT master 2, or just a vintage 1920 style pocket watch chained to a button
Or i dunno, just nothing, no watch, as time is just an illusion, just like hope
P.s. 2 days ago theres a frontpage reddit thread on jeff bezos making a $40million mechanical watch that is designed to outlast human extinction, pretty nifty

The one with the atlas embedded in the watch face is the new Aqua Terra Worldtimer I think. Released this year as a 75th anniversary edition.
Hey, that $40m Jeff Bezos thing, I thought that was a clock, not a watch? It's old news, bro, from 2018. It's just a giant clock built into a mountain.

Watch are you cheery about? You’ll have been waiting years! Obviously for you time is a virtue.
I have bad news for you mate, I reckon I could pick them as fakes in under a minute, Ive got a few watches (Tag, Panerai, Jaeger-LeCoultre and a Breitling) and when you have worn real Swiss watches for a while the fakes are usually pretty easy to pick. A mate showed me a Patek Phillipe watcth recently that had been given to him to cover a debt, it was a Nautilus, and, if real, worth over 100k. He knew I had a few watches and asked me to have a look. I'd never held one before, but at first glance I thought this could be real, it took a few minutes and some pretty close scrutiny but I am certain that it is a fake. Having said that it is a very, very good fake and is probably worth 20 to 30k even knowing it is fake.

I just prefer my Citizen Eco-Drive Satellite Wave.
My cheap Citizen Eco-Drive watch (priced at $150) have been lasting for a very long time. Almost 8 years now. Keeps time very well but the second hand a little wonky, and the stopwatch mode never sits exactly at 12 when you reset the timer.
I wear it for work. I've had it bashed through all kinds of surfaces and it's still holding up like a tank. Japanese innovation is truly remarkable even with a cheap price tag.

It’s called style, not all of us have it or are able to understand what it is. Being vanilla and blending into the masses is just boring.
Given this is a punting forum, I was once approached by a very hot girl in a party who spotted the gold chain of the watch and it led to a hot night back in my place.

Everything these days have some gold in it. Not everything gold is expensive as some are just gold plated.
I wonder if the girl is actually from some rural towns and have never seen proper expensive jewellery. If I go to Thailand I'm also very likely to pick a girl up without paying upfront just by flashing some gold cockrings.

Only if you're in a circle where you're comparing yourself to others. I reckon there's no need to compare your collection with others - it's a personal preference.
Personally I think the Spring Drive technology is great - if you're using an automatic winder you're less likely to readjust the time once every few months compared to most automatic watches.
that plus they don’t hold their value as well.
in addition they crappy looking bracelets , lug designs and horrible dimensions like thickness, lug width and diameters .

On the contrary they're cheaper than Rolexes in terms of similar models because of it's availability brand new. Most Rolexes in the market these days are second hand, and there's also the reputation of people viewing Rolexes as fake because of places such as Bali selling heaps of fakes that look almost original.
Personally I like Rolexes as well, mostly the dress watches like the Datejust. I would love to get both Datejust and GS Snowflake SBGA211 so that I can put both of them side by side. When it comes to bracelet vs leather straps I prefer leather straps, and NATO straps on divers watches.
On another note - when viewing most watches I realise that we're mostly paying for the brand. Most Swiss watches have very similar handiwork, yet what differentiates them in price is the availability. With Rolex they limit the production number each year and then introduced Tudor as sort of a branch that delivers the same handiwork but on a different logo.
Oh, and a review that compares both GS and Rolex. Note the reviewer mostly mention price difference rather than material or feel:
