View Full Version : General talk Punting after full retirement, money is one thing, what excuse can you use to get out ?

Hi there all the senior punters,
As yours truly is fast approaching the retirement age, one very depressing thought is the opportunity to have a punt once in a while will be gone along with the full time job.
Right now, doing a punt once a week or fortnightly is possible if arranging some early mark from work or taking the opportunity while out of the office on company business, not total freedom but possible if planned ahead carefully.
But once retired (in two to three years), not going to work five days a week, what excuses can I use to get out of the house for an hour or so without the lovely mrs coming along ?
I haven’t played golf for the past five years, and the wife knows my current group of friends have no golfers among them, seriously, I just can’t thing of a good reason which I can use regularly to skip out to have a quickie in the future, really sad feeling.
Any brothers who are in a similar situation got any smart and safe ideas ?
Please share
Cheers

How about volunteering a few days a week? Or gym.
Gives you a reason to get out of the house and I'm assuming the wife won't want to tag along to those activities

Thanks mate,
We have a full gym and indoor pool where we live.
Volunteering work is not my nature, more my wife’s…… lol
BTW, my wife is super suspicious, enough said . I have been really lucky and extremely careful.

Is there anyway to find a side hustle that gets you out of the house and also help fund a little bit of those punts?

I'd always fall back on fishing. There's water everywhere, learn about tides n there's your excuse to leave the house anytime. You don't even have to like it n so cheap to do at it's basic level. Just go thru the motions if that's all you want.

The races on Saturday mate. Bring it up as a hobby. Study the form late in the week. Listen to radio on Saturday morning and start going to nearest track. Randwick or Rosehill. Plenty of choices nearby both. Also will help if in retirement you start chasing the missus more. She will be happy you fuck off somewhere for the day 🤣🤣🤣

Just pick up any sort of hobby, but make sure it's not something the wife is interested in so she doesn't want to come along too. or ask you lots of questions about it.
Take up something like yoga, tai chi, lawn bowls, etc.
Say it's twice a week, but only go once a week, so you can answer any questions the wife has about it, and the other day go punting.
Or just say you are going to Bunnings. Quickly drop by there and buy a screwdriver or whatever and say you spent the rest of the time just browsing, but really get a quick punt in instead. If you live in a house with a yard, then take up gardening, that way you always have an excuse to go to Bunnings for supplies, tool, seeds etc. If you live in an apartment, set up a herb garden or something small like that.

Car washing weekly or fortnightly.
Car Service.
Bunnings.
Lunch with old work mates if still get along.
Have some time your own.
Fishing if Mrs don't come along.
Visit your own relatives if Mrs don't get along with them.

I would suggest that even if your group of friends have no golfers it does not mean that golf cannot be used as a 'get out' scenario.
If your wife knows you played in the past, why not decide that as you will have more time you will just try to get back into it?
You can play golf alone so do not need to have others, and your friends not being golfers gets you a direct reason to go it alone.

Or maybe open up the idea of becoming swingers? Get the wife involved? Lol.
That's if you're ok too.

But once retired (in two to three years)
You have 2-3 years to actually start any new hobby, by the time you retire she will already be used to you going out to do that hobby.
Alternatively get divorced.

I doubt a built in gym at an apartment complex is as good as a real gym. I've been to a few in these large complexes and they're absolutely shit. Almost zero free weights let alone a bench press, squat racks etc.
If you're wife is suspicious. It means she already suspects.

Just tell your wife the truth, that you cannot possibly sit at home retired and happy without your usual diet of BIG ML TITS
Telling the truth means the only thing he will be humping is his fist on a park bench outside the Bill Crew's Cafe.

Hey bro, these days retirement is really a choice rather than a must. There are plenty of older folks that continue working well past retirement. They can be doing it for fun or out of necessity.
On top of that, there's been research done on the longevity of people who stopped working at retirement vs those who continued working. They found that somehow, people who continued working lived healthier and longer lives than those who stopped working. Fark, who knows, maybe the people who continued working in that research also punted and that might've skewed the results, lol!
Keep working bro, stay healthy and keep punting!

whatever hobby or activity you take up, find something you like and do it for real most of the time.
i suggest get an ebike. it's a fun way to get around and handy exercise. she can't join you on the bike as you can't double. get pannier bags, pick up a few groceries on your way home, and voila!

Just start going to legit massages place one a week for your sore back. Than after a few visits book your wife in for a massage as well, just not at the same time as you. Than when you retire you can go for rub whenever you need to.

This is the idea. Just get a big lock or get an old bike that you have to pedal but will have no fear leaving in thefty spots. Some trains stations also have bike lockers. I do love my ride and root days.

MAAAATE .. can empathise and sympathise with you AHLUNGOR . Though I*m not married nor attached , I*ve followed some of your numerous posts and replies and have found some punts from them . I wasn*t attached but whilst in my senior years (mid 60s) and retired some 7 years earlier decided to cut ties (though still remain friends but without benefits now) and enjoy myself whilst I still can and am able despite some erectile problems . Just been having a great time since . Personally as some of the other guys mentioned take up a monotonous hobby your other half won*t take an interest in , fishing , cycling , photography , trainspotting and partake twice a week / fortnight , then there*s your opportunity . Good luck !

Golf is something you can do well into your senior years, and is great exercise. Why do you need friends doing it to start?
You will make friends if you go.

Well龍哥, I just retired not long ago. Surely there are risks always that your mrs will suspect what you are doing regardless. But your little bro will always find you good reason to meet his unforgettable ML/WLs only once in a while. Let's worry more about erectile problem at our age as this is the real distress given the opportunity to punt🤣.

This is good advice I like this. Scale down work to 3 days a week, earn some coin, stay mentally sharp and get a punt in each week on the way home. Genius.
Ahlungor, your thread opener sounded pretty depressing to me! I thought fuck If that’s the realisation come retirement date then re-assess bro. I can’t envisage the mighty forum E-cup Oracle sitting at home with his wings clipped. 😂

My suggestion would be to not scheme anything as you can never predict what the other person would do. If you plan to fully retire, you will have a lot of time on your hand. Just try out different things/activities/hobbies and eventually, the "window" will open up. Let things play out naturally and you probably will not be found out.

Go to a film, preferably something long and indulgent like Killer of the Flower Moon
Fark that was so bad, I seriously regretted not going to bust a nut instead of sitting through that crap. Who would've thought Scorcese could create such a monotonous and repetitive film? Trying too hard, maybe...

Full gym like in your apartment? Those equipment's are not great.
Sarcopenia is something elderly should try to avoid at all cost as it greatly affects health outcome. So going to the gym to build muscles with proper weights isn't out of the question. Should bring your wife along. And being a woman. there will be times she wouldn't want to come and those may be the time you can visit a different gym. The workout time lines up.
surely your wife doesn't expect you to be home 24/7 right? and spend every waking moment with her. Every man need's his alone time to do his own thing. no? is this not the norm?

I saw this gent on Antiques Roadshow who'd brought in an antique "Charles Atlas" style barbell. He looked almost 80. He was wearing a jumper and his muscular frame was filling it out dynamically. In fact he looked like Superman if he'd reluctantly been forced into retirement. It looked like an aged head had been digitally superimposed onto a superhero's body, and the two sets of data just weren't adding up. :shout:
Also, people might look at an old person with good muscles and think that is all they see. In fact the muscles only reflect the strength of the bones they are attached to. Just as muscles are worked and muscle cells are added to so too are bone cells added to the bones, which are being worked at the same time.
So it seems to me that muscle wastage and osteoporosis in advanced age must be entirely voluntary.

Walking as a form of exercise. Since going around the block gets old fast, get an Opal card, say you want to visit different parts of the city (no shopping allowed).

IMO - the most important thing is to put enough money away to enable you to still go punting after retirement. Lets say - money for the next 5 years, after that ?
Once you have the means to the end , other things will have a way of working themselves out . You don't know what your routine is going to be on retirement. Just make sure she has enough independence (drives herself around) to do things on her own. Her circle of friends or family commitments will determine her time away from you. The biggest challenge is booking ahead, teeing up a time to meet you regular , especially when you can't plan ahead when that window of opportunity presents itself.
When she does her things that is when you do your thing. Lol.
