Seriously, Sydney has a fantastic public transport system. Trains, trams, buses, ferries... You can buy an Opal card (good for any public transport) at most any convenience store, or just use your credit card. It's TAP ON, AND TAP OFF. I use Google Maps (despite the derision on the forum). Plug in destination, your location, and up pops directions. Public transport vehicles (trams, busses, etc.) are updated in real time, so it will tell you how long your wait will be. For buses, will show you the number of stops and when you reach your stop (HELPFUL HINT: turn your volume off, otherwise your destination will be announced for all to hear: (GINZA 1 stop away"). OK, you do have to have an internet connection. I just get a local sim card to avoid roaming charges.
