It wasn't a coup, but it was effectively the president self declaring a "coup" on himself because he can't make policies pass due to leading a minority government. In his mind this means there must be a conspiracy to destroy South Korean democracy.

Immediately after Korean democracy voted pretty unanimously to end martial law, but it required the president formally declaring the end of it and by that point he was like "I'll do it in the morning". Now he's acting like he just did it in some attempt to selflessly make himself a canary in the mine.

I doubt he thinks there's a conspiracy against democracy. He's accused the opposition of containing agents of North Korea which is totally baseless. He's just desperate, impotent and his wife is also suspected of manipulating stock prices amongst other things.
He did approve the lifting of martial law eventually and he's bound to be impeached shortly.
He freaked out and fucked up.
