Ok, this won't be a very long lasting thread, but it's purpose for me is to vent my bewilderment and disgust about the incompetence that led to the deaths of so many innocent people. I feel for our Korean friends.

I've seen footage and the pilot was making a beautiful textbook belly landing. The plane and it's precious occupants were being slowed gradually by friction over the whole of the plane's underbelly. It was probably more efficient than brakes and tyres would be.

So someone builds a solid brick wall at the end of the runway just in case some outstanding pilot in an emergency tries to shepherd his cargo of souls to safety.

Landing gear fault takes precedent so Boeing should take the majority of the blame.

OP, I beg to differ. Brakes, flaps, reverse engine thrust slows plane much faster than a partial belly landing given that part of the weight was born by the engine cowlings (less friction contact). Plane landed much faster than normal AND touched down 2/3rds of the way down the runway, thus leaving only about 1/3 of usable runway. The poor design of the cement wall 250m past the end of the runway to support the landing system was unfortunate, but still within allowed limits. Yes, in hindsight, better to have breakaway supports AND an after runway design designed to slow planes overshooting runway (aerated concrete). However, looking at an aerial photo of the airport, looks like a bit of a dropoff someways after the wall.

BOTH engines out? Low to ground, losing air speed, loss of hydraulics, no time to manually lower landing gear, to deploy APU? No power, no hydraulics. These days, rarely a single cause but a combination of events ending in disaster.

Terrible tragedy…I saw a short on YouTube where some pilots were trying to figure out what happened with the limited video footage. Hard to figure out what actually happened unless black box data is fully analysed. Scary to think I flew Jeju Air last December when travelling in SK.

True, such a stupid idea whoever built that at the end of runway. The airport is to blame as well for negligence of safety.

FACT: NY Times
The International Civil Aviation Organization recommends a standard buffer zone of about 180 to 300 meters, or 591 feet to 984 feet, from the end of the runway. At Muan airport, the concrete structure surrounded by a mound of dirt sits roughly 250 meters from the end of the runway, according to local officials.

FACT OF LIFE: It takes a disaster for specs/requirements to be reevaluated/changed.

RIP.

There will be a lot more to come out about this tragedy but for us, the news media will see it as relatively unimportant. The crash will get eyeballs but the circumstances will not. RIP to the victims and I hope the families get to find comfort in knowing the truth 🙏🙏🙏
