The Vietnamese government has just decreed that it is illegal for private apartment owners to put their properties on AirBNB

There are so few on the AirBNB site now so it looks like its back to the mini hotels for those who want the finer things from a trip to VN

for those who haven't been there, it is also illegal for you to have a visitor that yo are not married to in your hotel room - this is not enforced by smaller hotels, but the larger ones will either have no guest policies or curfew times of 9 or 10 PM.

visitors will need to register at the reception desk and leave their ID card. if they come back for it after curfew, the hotel must legally report them.

Luckily for us there are plenty of mini hotels who dont enforce this rule, and at some of the mid sized ones a few bucks to the doorman enabled the rules to be broken. for us regular travelers to VN, there are some loopholes and ways of getting girls to your room and have them stay all night if you want to... PM for details

The changes to AIrBNB was as a result of apartment owners getting upset about noise/parties/and shared facilities being used by casual guests

Thanks for clarifying this. Some owners seem to be holding out.

I'm currently in an Airbnb. Owner has all my details. No idea if they have me registered. I have an extended stay, so maybe I've also become 'extended' family.

Stayed at a short time hotel recently. Only show phone pic of passport which was enough to gain entry.

Do you have more info on this? I’ve got an Airbnb booked in HCMC in May. It’s perfect for visitors, big room with two massive beds, decent shower, on a main road but has a discreet entrance and being a normal unit building it doesn’t look out of place when you get a visitor. The main chick who visited me last time used to live in the building.

I hope I don’t have to switch to a hotel.

Found a few articles like that. Not sure if I should cancel or not.

There is a Vietnamese lawyer on YouTube who speaks fluent English and he explains why Airbnb is illegal in Vietnam.
The lawyer resembles similar to TV host Steve Harvey so can easily find his channel on YouTube

I'm now into my third AirBNB booking since the ban came into effect.

Uber, Grab etc were also illegal prior to their acceptance. Let's see if the weight of free commerce can overcome centralised government.
