Lol, interesting way to do it, I think I stopped doing it that way before I was teenager, too much effort.
I think the OP could try a fleshlight or onahole, some of these onaholes are unbelievable in how close they are too the real thing, some give even more sensation than the real thing, but these can help re-train your dick.
Using your hand does desensitize as well, so unless it was your other hand, rather than the one you normally use, I'd advise not to use your hand.

I think andrewv got it right. Some men are more particular than others when getting off and achieving orgasm/ejaculation - sounds like you are very particular with what kind of stimulation you receive.

I don't have the same "method" as you, but I had similar experiences. I'm uncircumcised, and never peeled back my foreskin until my first brothel visit at 21.
