I’m currently dating an Indian woman who grew up in India and she speaks of the levels of fear of sexual harassment that women have. It is a patriarchal society with high levels of discrimination towards women built into it. The men, she says, are so sexually frustrated because of the culture that is imposed on them and that together with the views that women are of less consequence, that sexual harassment and rape is far too common.

I travelled to India early 2000's, never been there before and on the way over was reading through one of those travel books (Lonely Planet type thing) and was all this stuff about the rich deep culture and how religious the people are, and that if you are female best to wear long dresses and forget wearing shorts since you'll be seen as a slut etc.

Any, first day I'm there in New Dehli I go to this main town square and ask for an internet cafe (seems weird even thinking of those things now), anyways there was this place upstairs on top of other shops and when I get in and sit at a computer, everyone else in there is male (zero females) and the dude next to me starts asking "where are you from", and I noticed he is looking at XXX porn pics and everyone in the place is just surfing that shit, nothing else.
It was quite a mind fuck within 24 hours of reading all this shit about deep religious culture and offending them if you were short dresses etc.

If I was in Sydney, blokes would have been embarrassed to strike up a conversation with a stranger (even a guy) which having an image of people fucking on their screen, but here is was just normal.
