Calm down tiger, it's only punting. TBF, he's got a point. You said it yourself, nth Sydney is a dead town. It's never been good punting grounds even in the best of times including Pure Massage.
So why not just hop on the train and head to Central station, walk a bit and voila, you're in Surry Hills. At most it'll be 30 mins of commute time. Depending on where he is in nth Sydney, going to any of the recommended places near nth Sydney could easily take almost the same amount of time.

North side is definitely quieter than CBD, not as many options tbh
a lot of people end up going Crows Nest / Chatswood for better variety

North Sydney is for work only, bro. Always has been always will be. It somehow managed to make itself into the most boring CBD ever that is devoid of any entertainment.
City, Parra and Chatswood are all big CBDs with more offices than North Sydney, they all have lots of entertainment near the offices. Lots of restaurants open late, cinemas, malls, things for the kids to play. Heck even Macquarie Park / North Ryde business parks have at least a Macquarie Centre for entertainment nearby.

North Sydney? They have fricking Greenwood plaza, what a depressing shithole on weekends.
