Just curious for those of you who “play away from home,” as they say: do you feel the need to get tested even when you have no symptoms, or only when something shows up?

This isn’t judgement of anyone who plays away or takes risks with uncovered sex – it’s just a genuine question for the community.

I personally play safe, but I still get tested every 6–8 weeks for my own peace of mind, for the ladies I see, and for the wider community. The tests I get include bloods, urine (two samples), plus mouth and anal swabs.

Some of you might wonder why the two different swabs. The mouth swab is for anyone who enjoys giving oral pleasure, and the anal swab is for those who like prostate play.

I was reading the other day that gonorrhoea in the mouth is on the rise. So I headed down to my testing centre for a check-up. They confirmed it’s becoming more common. Luckily, everything came back clear for me.

What I’m trying to get across is this: for those of you who play – even if you use protection – just go and get yourself tested from time to time. You’re not only looking after yourself, you’re also helping the ladies you see and other people in the community.

Hi WSP, thanks for the question. Yeh I got tested earlier this year and found out I had throat gonorrhoea, not sure when i got it as I had no symptoms. I could have had it for a long time. If you punt at all and/or have more than one regular sexual partner, any sort of play (covered or uncovered) you should get tested every three months as a baseline minimum. For everyone's sake, including your own.
If you think you don't need to get tested because you don't get any symptoms, you're an idiot who needs to look up the word 'asymptomatic' (if you can't be bothered, it means not showing any symptoms while still having a disease/infection). And you should get tested. If you're clear, at least you now know for sure. Otherwise, you're the next Typhoid Mary and probably spread something to others already.

Don't wait till symptoms show up. Go get tested regularly.
If you have a slip up (condom fell off or whatever), you're still going to have wait a week or two for it to show up in your blood, so book that in and monitor yourself.

Complete random doctor and no consultation needed just answer a few questions and you get emailed a referral to take straight to a pathology clinic where the actual test is free if you have Medicare. Then you get emailed the results directly. I've used it a few times when my regular GP was booked out for a few weeks and I didn't wanna wait. Though if you go about it that way, the referral will cost you about $20 as they don't bulk bill. If you can afford to drop big bank regularly to get nuts off, surely you can afford $20 every couples of weeks or months.

Stigmahealth is another online option if u don’t feel comfortable asking your GP for a referral. Think they charge about $50 for referral then u just take it to your local pathology. Results usually take around 2-3 days and get emailed directly to u.

From what I can read here, it sounds like the standard test is blood and urine, but should also ask for a mouth swab.
Is this still all standard that can be done through an online referral or do you need to go to a doctor to get the mouth swab? At first I was thinking this is great I will be doing this way from now on but had a look at the itemised record on Medicare and they list it as a std consult instead of a 5 min consultation if you see a regular doctor. Standard panel for testing is HIV, Syphilis, Chlamydia, and Gonorrhoea. These should be done every 3-6 months for hetrosexuals with multiple partners. At least every 3 months for Men who have sex with Men. Any other STIs like M.Gen or Trichomoniasis would require further investigation or if you’re a contact or fit the risk profile. Herpes can only be tested for if you have present clusters of lesions on skin.

You can get this tests privately and discreetly at your local GP, Sexual Health Centre, or online sites like HeyFella or SISTR.

I would highly recommend the Sexual Health Info Link if you need to speak to a Registered Nurse about any general sexual health question.
