The income gap between Australia and Japan is definitely one factor, but I think there’s also a cultural side to it. Japan has a much more open attitude towards sex compared with China and South Korea, which have been more strongly influenced by Confucian culture.

Japan really is quite different from its neighbours in that respect. By the way, I’ve heard that papakatsu (パパ活) has become pretty common in Japan, even among some very young people. Pretty crazy when you think about it.
