What is the story behind that statue?
It's Hermes, Messenger of the Gods, Deep Impact, or it might be Hermes, Messenger to the Gods - I'm not quite sure.
Anyway, the story behind the statue - or the statue behind the story, I should say - is that Hermes failed to deliver a very important message to Juno (who was Zeus's wife) from Zeus that he would be delayed home that night because of very important Head of the Godly matters. Hermes had to deliver so many messages you see - being the only poor c**t in Olympus with that duty - that he just forgot about the one from Zeus to Juno.
But the real reason that Zeus would be late was that he was actually on Earth on the punt with Alcmene, who subsequently gave birth to the half man, half god (and full time hero) Hercules.
Because the message didn't get through, Juno, suspicious, got wind of what Zeus had been up to and banished him to the doghouse for a long, long time.
Hermes, in turn, was banished to Earth by a pissed off Zeus, and this statue immortalises the exact moment when Hermes voiced his opinion of what he thought of Zeus, who he felt had been philandering after all, and so was hardly blameless himself.
Hermes made the best of it though, and adapted his skills by setting up a business distributing flowers world wide - to lovers, philandering lovers, and punters who have been similarly caught out - just like Zeus - by their wives and girlfriends, and are desperately trying to make it good.
Who says that the Gods are no longer relevant to our lives?
