Dumb question but I'm curious. What's the reason behind this? It can't be because of the risk of STD's - if protected, the probabilities are extremely small. So this leads me to believe there may be some moral impetus? Maybe my moral standards are just non-existent but I'm struggling to see the reason.

There isn't always a logical reason why certain Laws are in place.
So there is no rhyme or reason for why it's illegal or legal.
It usually boils down to social beliefs and popular opinion.
For example, in China, prostitution is illegal because the government says so. No reason other than they say so.
With that said. Legalizing prostitution actually makes everything safer.
For example. If you take off your condom during sex with a WL, it's considered Rape and they have no problem reporting you to the police. Hence you'd never even consider it.
However you do the same thing in china. and the WL can't turn to the authorities for help because they're doing something illegal.
Exactly like someone didn't pay you for the gram of cocaine you sold them. What are you going to do? report it to the cops?
And that's where Pimps and underground gangs step in to protect WLs. making the whole situation worse.

You would need a PhD in sociology, theology, jurisprudence, psychology, economics, philosophy, politics, anthropology, ethnology and lots of other shit ... and even then you would struggle to come up with an answer to this question ... things are what they are ...

What do you mean things are what they are? Surely some people out there must think prostitution is bad and some of these will have reasons for believing so. What are some examples of these reasons?

It probably dates back to an era when religion, and religious beliefs, played a much more important role in society.
Sex outside of marriage was regarded as "sinful", regardless of who with, so efforts had to be made to prevent it. Governments had to be seen to complying with religious constraints, so prostitution was illegalised in law.
It was one of those "industries" that could never be wiped out, but it attracted more sideline illegal activity than the act itself. Pimping, bribery, violence, etc.
Some governments eventually realised that as it was a victim-less crime; the best way to clean up the problems was to legalise, but regulate, it. Different jurisdictions have taken different approaches.
NSW has taken a very liberal approach, much to our benefit.

I suppose back in the old days with no condoms, there's the chance of accidently impregnating someone which can lead to sticky situations. Maybe that's what gave rise to some of these beliefs.
Related topic - why is having sex with others viewed so negatively when you are already in a relationship? Is it not possible to love someone and have lust for others at the same time? And if so, what is the problem with this? Again, maybe my moral radar is completely off but I'm not seeing the reasons.

Sex was regarded solely as a method of making babies. You weren't expected to actually get any enjoyment out of it. Having a child out of wedlock made a woman a social outcast; a "bastard" baby was usually quickly disposed of by adoption. Living together outside of marriage was also frowned upon, a virgin bride was a social norm. THis was mainly based on religious dogma, although it seems to have prevalent in many non-religious cultures as well.

Yes it's possible to love someone and lust after another. Human's are not designed to be monogamous, Especially men. Our program is to spread seed.
Society just trains us to think monogamy is good and polygamy is bad. (for obvious reasons of having out of wedlock children you can't care and social burden it produces, along with other things etc etc)
monogamous relationships make society easier to manage on a whole.
Don't forget. It wasn't that long ago that it was normal for a man to have multiple wives. Even the bible speaks of polygamy. Which makes sense at the time. Men died a lot at war (probably the young able body ones). lot of left over women. Need to increase numbers for society / create more able body soldiers.
It's only viewed as bad depending on the persons belief who's viewing you.
There are plenty of people in open relationships and have swingers party. It really depends on the person.
BUT majority of society has been trained to think and act in a certain way because of the current social structure. Hence the norm is to perceive it as bad. Go back a few hundred/thousand years and have at it with multiple wives.
