View Full Version : Question Staying fit

Just wondering how you people stay fit and in shape. (other than from lots of punting lol)
puntercouple

Staying in shape is 85% diet and 15% exercise. Exercise is the key component though. A common misconception is that you exercise to burn kj and lose weight. In actual fact, exercise increases your metabolism, which makes your body less efficient.

My only cardio these days is punting lol
But I have started lifting again.
Puntercouple has it right, if you are trying to lose weight its mainly diet.

I think punting does make me watch my weight a bit more. Seeing yourself naked in the shop mirrors everyday can bring a reality check !!
I want to look reasonably good and have started getting a bit of a belly recently so I have just started a diet. I am 5ft 11 and got up to 89kg which is too much. My wife is doing a high fat, low carb diet and she has lost 6 kgs in two months.
I have always exercised everyday riding my bike for one hour but I like my snacks especially chips.
Have lost 1.5kg in the last week and my aim is to get down to lower 80's kg.
Always a good idea to look after your weight and health. A long life is a long punting life :cool2:

I think your Mrs is on to something there, perhaps you should stay home more and going out less???

Diet is most important followed by regular exercise. Cut out all sugar and if possible alcohol as well (yes I know, boring).
Depending on your goal, a 20 minute brisk walk every day could be sufficient. If a higher level of fitness is the goal then aerobic activities such as running or cycling will do the job. Cardio is good for building muscle and drop body fat but contrary to popular thinking will result in weight increase as muscle weighs more than fat.
The best aproach is to consult your physician before commencing any exercise or diet change

I go to the gym every day. Some days I go harder than others. It's not a motivation thing, it's a discipline thing.
Set a time of day to go to the gym & go without fail. You can still do cardio at home!

Currently doing 3 day split, but running it twice a week. Bodyweight is over 100kg and sitting at a decent bodyfat % (last calliper measurement was a fortnight ago). Currently on nolva PCT. Staying fit and looking after the rig is always top priority. As Socrates said:
"No citizen has a right to be an amateur in the matter of physical training".

oh, and I walk to the fish 'n' chip shop and back too.
I usually get extra chips because I can't resist eating half the chips on the walk back home.
There's nothing like tearing a hole in the paper wrapper and picking out those piping hot salty chips blowing on them to cool them off a bit and then straight into your gob.
Hot chips ... one of life's simple pleasures ... especially after you've had half a bottle of bourbon or a 6 pack of beer.

Keep in mind that a drastic diet change may shock your body and therefore you should ease yourself into it. Same goes with exercise. Don't just wake up one day and decide to run a full marathon.

Sex has many of the same effects on the body as an intense workout. During sex, your heart races, your metabolic rate increases, you burn calories, and stretch and strengthen muscles. Sex has also been shown to boost the immune system and provide stress relief, just like a good cardio session.
As far as sex counting towards strength training, you do use a lot of muscles. If you prefer to be on top, the legs and arms get a lot more action than if you are a passive partner. The thrusting motion of sex is great to firm the stomach and glutes, which can improve posture.
Sex is a great way to get your blood pumping and burn calories. If you believe you can skip the gym workout for sex, think again. For the sake of your health, and how you look during sex, however, make a habit of engaging in both regularly. You're better off getting sweaty in the gym, and then reaping the sexual benefits of your workout afterward.

Wow, I admire all of you. No need to lose weight but I really want to have a flat tummy. However, I'm too lazy to go for exercises. Running? Naaa. Too boring and tiring. Gym? Naaa, don't have enough time and no one to company there. Registered for Crunch three months ago but never showed up. Thinking of cancelling now. 6 days finish earliest at 8pm that I can't make time.
But I agreed that diet works well. I didn't intend to go for diet but after moving house and living by myself, I lost weight as less eating out, not much cooking so I had bread with butter in approximately two weeks. 1-2kg loss.

Oh yessssss, hard to say "no" to hot chips. I'm fan of chocolates, ice cream and hot chips. T.T one thing that keeps me away from foods is I sometimes am so tired that I prefer going to sleep than eating.

I know when you work late shift its difficult not to binge when you
finish. Eating before you sleep is worse thing. Best not to eat 2hrs
before you sleep. Because when you sleep your metabolism slows
down. Easy to understand difficult to implement.

I hit the gym 4-5 times a week for 45m to 1h15m.
I'd estimate I've put on about 8kg of muscle mass in the last 2.5 years of training and physically feel the best I've ever felt in my life. I would suggest to anyone out there looking to feel better about themselves to start a good weight training/resistance based program (stress on the word good).
You don't need to turn into a monk regarding dieting as well. I still enjoy beer and cheat meals on a pretty regular basis. Doesn't really impact my results.

:shout:literally a "toast" sandwich. That is, two slices of bread with a slice of buttered toast in the middle. Never heard of that before but I can say I'll never have such a ridiculous overload of 100% carbs sandwich with no filling!

Eat, drink, have fun, walk, run, swim, explore, fuck, enjoy.
Don't count calories, or steps, or anything.
Life is not about counting, or statistics, or how much you can bench press.
Enjoy your fucking life!
You don't have to have a 6 pack or 8 pack or massive pecs, or gluts, or whatevers.
Just relax and enjoy.
For sure, yes, be sensible, don't do massive amounts of heroin, cocaine, ice, marijuana, alcohol, nicotine, tar, MMDA etc.
But every now and then have a little splurge and treat.
Respect your fucking body, it's the only one you have got and maybe ever will have.
Eat lots of fruit and veg and wholegrain cereals - they can actually be quite delicious.
But also enjoy a chocolate or gelato or doughnut, and enjoy them guilt free!
And most importantly relax, enjoy, be ... "don't worry, be happy"

Planking, sit-ups, crunches, leg raises etc will build abdominal muscles and strengthen the core but will do nothing to eliminate the layer of fat covering them. As the old saying goes, you build abs in the kitchen not in the gym.
Strip the fat with good nutrition and controlled calories, then build from there.

Yep that's right, some people think to lose weight in a certain area they need to exercise that area, it won't help.

Sit-ups and crunches are actually no longer recommended because of the detrimental effects on your lumbar spine.
Planks, side-planks, barbell rollouts, hanging leg raises etc are better. Even the Ab RipperX from the P90X program.

Diet is the most important factor. Cardio and weight training is pretty much useless unless backed up by a good diet.
Diet (and adequate rest) determines 75-80% of your results. Gym/exercise contribute only 20%

Oats and protein in the morning, chicken/fish with rice and vegetables lunch, eggs/tuna/sardines at around 4, lots of vegetables and a chicken breast /grilled fish for dinner and a protein shake (casein) to bed
Try lowering your carb intake and increasing good fats. Protein with every meal. Resistance training. Short bouts of conditioning. Monitor your progress by how you look, not what you weigh. Adjust as necessary.

I've been doing loose keto for a while, don't really carb count but its usually <20g
I find it stops me drinking due to how alcohol really hits you hard while in ketosis and it also prevents me eating shite.
Though I do find myself craving rice/noodles the biggest one is missing congee lol
I also lift 4 days a week (n-Suns 531 LP) and run on offdays.

Is that based on Wendler’s 531? Solid program.

Yeah its a variant on a 1 week cycle, flexible accessory and lots of volume on the t1/t2 lifts.
Faster progression so better for Beginner -> Intermediate lifters which is where I am atm.

Interesting - I had been doing stronglifts 5x5 for some time but whilst I enjoyed it and getting decent gains doing squats 3 times a week was wearing me down. This program looks like it balances it out across the week. Currently lifting 4 days a week and interval sprints 2 days a week.
What are your lifting numbers like atm?

I did SL5x5 for a fair while but stopped due to boredom/injury, I agree with squats wearing you down it gets annoying. I also found it wasn't enough upperbody work for my liking.
I modified the base nsuns 4day to double up on OHP and added more back work with barbell rows and deadlift rows.
My numbers put me inbetween novice-intermediate for my weight so I'm still a novice when it comes to lifting.
