Yep, where I came from whitening products are a big deal and light skin is considered beauty. I have heard that some associate lighter skin with being high caste (or foreign/white). The hard laborers had to stay out in the sun to work and thus had darker skin while the higher caste stayed indoors and were not as tan. Honestly, a good explanation as any.
