Besides Chinese cupping, there’s another technique called 刮痧, the practitioner would use a spoon, normally ceramic spoon although some use metal spoon, to scratch on the skin in long strokes, it hurts a lot, but the effect is like cupping. It would leave markings on the skin. If the markings are red, they will fade in a few days, the ailment is low. If the markings are black, it will take a week or two to fade, that shows the ailment was high and now fixed. So the markings will be of irregular shapes and sizes, unlike cupping.
