If someone asks can I check your bags can't you just say no
And if they say they need to

Of course you can say no that’s why they ask. But if you say no, they can also tell you to piss off and deny you entry. Only police are legally allowed to search your bag and they have to have reasonable suspicion you’ve committed a crime.
Any shop or retailer has the right to refuse you entry and also to call their security if you are already inside and refuse to show the contents of your bags

You're not legally obliged to comply, but it's a condition of entry imposed by the shop or wherever you're at. If you don't want to follow their conditions then they have the right to refuse entry or ask you to leave.

What's the point in OP's grievances? I thought he was writing about brothels checking bags for potential hidden cameras.
In some countries they'll wave a metal detector wand on your bag before entering shopping malls and subway stations because of terrorist activities in the past that took hundreds of lives.
My grievance is the way they ask they should say
I need to check your bags
I'm going to do a bag check
Instead of saying
Can I check your bag
As long as they carry them too then why not?

I think it's important to be assertive when it comes to your own and other people's safety. Even though you may not feel the need for someone to check your bags, if they ask, you should comply. That being said, I don't think that putting a used condom in your bag is the way to go. It can be really off-putting.
I was at HK airport and was asked by a lady obviously customs and unloaded the bag on the floor in the middle of the terminal.
As usual on the way back your bag is full of dirty laundry.
That was the only issue. The clothes.
That and batteries in some items.
