There is a documentary about this in Japan, the workers say they are emotionally drained and can't do it for long.
Yeah when I was in Osaka last year, I saw a lot of Host Boys walking up to women chatting thing up. Some politely declined and other just plainly ignored them eg). I was waiting at a traffic light near Umeda station late one night with a Jap girl standing next to me, a guy dressed in denim with chains went up to this to this girl and just started talking to her. She just stared blankly ahead and away from him, and he kept talking. It was super awkward and amusing at the same time.

I had a few Host Boys come up to me as well which was when I realised that I was in the gay area of Umeda.....lol. Most quickly moved on when they realised that I wasn't Jap, but one spoke English and was preeeetty persistent (started rubbing my back while I was walking along....lol.)
