    Getting your hands on cash

For those punters with long term GF or wives and shared bank accounts, punting funds can be tricky.

Cash is king - and for me, in today’s digital world, regular ATM withdrawals can raise questions. Thought I would share some methods I have of acquiring cash here & there. Some of these require more set up than others but YMMV.

    For me they fall under 2 main categories;

    1. Plausible reasons/excuses why you are withdrawing cash from a shared account
    2. Getting cash on the side another way

Here’s some excuses/reasons why you may withdraw cash. I find that sometimes, I just withdraw a little extra for the proper purpose (pocketing the difference) and sometimes, I just withhold the lot:

    1. Want to buy something on gumtree/facebook marketplace. Either you actually buy it (for cheaper than you withdraw, pocketing difference) or say someone else jumped in and bought it, the seller is mucking you around etc. Keep the lot.
    2. Mention a few times that you are sick of paying credit card surcharges and want to start paying for things in cash
    3. If you go to the pub, withdraw some money and say you wanted to have a go on the pokies. Whether you actually play or not is up to you.
    4. If there is a wedding, birthday etc coming up - say you’ll give cash. Withdraw a little extra and let her assume you’re giving the lot
    5. Show a genuine interest in getting legit massages. Perhaps visit a few proper places and pay on cc. There is a place near me, however, that charges much less if you pay in cash and forego HICAPS - say you want to save some money and pay cash. Bonus - explains coming home smelling like massage oil
    6. Find some other business that is cash only. Takeaway shop, barber etc. Rare, but they exist. Either withdraw cash, buy the thing and pocket the difference or pocket the lot.
    7. If you’re going to the races or casino, hell Melbourne Cup sweeps - cash in and get cash out
    8. If you have a tradesman come around - offer to pay in cash for a discount. Again, withdraw a little extra

Finally - Here’s some other ways I’ve thought to acquire cash aside from an ATM - again, some harder than others:

    1. If dining in a group setting - offer to pay the bill on my card and others may give cash for their share
    2. Receiving as birthday/Christmas presents
    3. Selling items second hand, eg even gift cards at a discount (can get these through surveys etc)
    4. Return & earn 10c cans
    5. Open a separate bank account and siphon money there somehow
    6. Do a side hustle for cash - dog walking, handyman work, ironing etc

    Any other ideas share away!

Honestly I wouldnt even punt if I ever found myself in that situation. Think about it. You're in a relationship with a controlling woman, you've setup a joint account with her, you're letting her watch over that account like a hawk. You got into that relationship and you're staying in it. All of the above were conscious decisions that you've made. You deliberately put yourself in that position.

So why not just consciously, deliberately NOT punt? It's probably the easiest thing to do after all the effort that you've put in.

Get into conspiracy theories and say you don't want anyone knowing what you spend your money on.
If the bank starts questioning why you're taking out so much cash tell them because they charge fees every time you pay by card.
On November 11 they saying only pay cash and no online purchases to protest digital id

I like your determination for using return and earn cans to finance your punting.

Wow yeah that's a pickle to be in for sure. In my situation we've maintained separate accounts with just a shared savings that we both throw extra into once in a while so I'm basically free as a bird compared to that.

Of the ideas presented I think the pokies one is actually probably the safest. But then again, telling your SO that you've been putting that much into pokies might raise a different kind of issue.

Personally I have tons of vices but I feel blessed that gambling has never been one of them. I feel for those struggling with it. Hard when they're around most corners in city centres.

Key is establishing a seperate bank account, your slush fund essentially.
    Or get a new wife

Thanks for the relationship advice. At the risk of getting off topic I think there’s a pretty big line between “controlling” and “why are you suddenly withdrawing $300 cash every week or two”. She buys stuff she wants, as do I. The point of this thread is specifically about cash. How to get it in ways that don’t raise eyebrows, when 99% of all transactions are done with card and has become the norm

Agreed, the pokies one is plausible within reason, but if you’re withdrawing hundreds of dollars regularly (and never winning) it raises problems on its own

The key for me is exploiting a little bit at a time and after ~2 months I punt.

If you need to punt every week or two, you need a better system for regular cash. I agree

I haven’t tried woolies but I’ve done this at both Coles & a servo when getting petrol, both times my bank noted it as a cash withdrawal. Do you think it’s a Woolies thing or something with my bank?

Otherwise this is a great strategy

As others stated just go Woolies.

Make a purchase like normal when grocery shopping and you can select the option to pay by card and cash withdrawal together.

It only ever comes up on my anz statements as a purchase from Woolies, never a separate cash transaction.

Or you can just go to the register and ask them to do it there too.

Mate its the bank 🏦. My Commonwealth shows it separately no matter where i withdraw yet my ANZ incorporates it as 1 total sum.

LOL, returning cans as punting fund...

Everytime you hand over a pineapple, you will be thinking, that's 500 cans of work....

Cash out at the servo. Although I think there is a limit now or it’s no longer possible.

Open another account where you transfer to and say its a mate borrowing cash or paying back a loan

How many of you have had dinner in an Asian or Chinese restaurant which will offer a 5% to 10% discount if you pay by cash ?

On the other hand, most places where you are paying your meals by tapping or cards, you will be charged an additional 1-2% credit card fees. you can do the sums. it will be a minimum of 6% savings on your bill if you pay by cash. explain that to your other account holder and you should be able to gradually build up a little punting kitty on the side.

Also, go play some pokes, go casino or to the TAB and just use cash and don't disclose EVERY TIME you win, and of course, if you win BIG, you only win little......lol

    Good luck,

    Cheers'

I like a drink, and cash in my cans and bottles whenever the big box I dump them into gets full. Even at that rate, my best return was around $25, just after last Xmas. If i was rely on that to fund punting, I would go celibate.

For the record - middle aged, no-one to hide any transactions from.

    Good luck!
