New to posting, long time lurker. People who don’t want to or can’t use their real number, is the general consensus just to get a prepaid sim even if you need to use a valid ID to activate it? Just checking if this is the norm.
feel free to discuss your go-to options, or general thoughts or tips for other newbies that might read this and wondering the same thing
cheers 🙏🏼

if you don't want a shop or an ml to message you out of the blue and privacy is important, prepaid SIM. Don't worry about ID, its not an illegal activity.
PSA: Gents, think about other devices connected to your phone/google account. I have a tablet attached to the wall to control the aircon. I accidentally closed the app. Google ap was open, my search history was on full display. I logged out pretty quick. If you have a significant other and they stumbled across this, you'd likely be up shit creek getting divorced. I'm an inactive FB user, i don't have a photo. On the odd occasion I log in, I see MLs as suggested friends.

It takes like 5 minutes to set up a new email account, and you can link it to your regular mobile. So create thegelding_home@google.com for all those automation devices. Google can link the accounts together, but if someone sees the account as in your case all they see is what you used it for in the home. Same for youtube on the TV, different account so no one sees your regular viewing habits.

a) Aldimobile $5 sim starter - number good for a year
b) Google incognito browser
c) Protonmail - free account, not as intrusive as google
d) Register Aldimobile to this email
My burner Facebook account is registered only to the above. I only access my burner FB account through Incognito.

legend cheers for this. just what I was looking for. hope it helps other newbies. i actually do use protonmail also. looks like ill be going with the aldi sim — 1 year expiry is convenient and just register with email rather than ID? or ID still required? either way this sounds like the best way

register with ID but I have a feeling their internal systems are a little lax.
