View Full Version : General talk SOCCEROOS World Cup 2014 Group. We are gonna get SMASHED !

Socceroos have been drawn in the Same Group as current World Champions Spain and Runners-Up Netherlands, and South American powerhouse Chile in next years Football World Cup.
We drew the toughest Group in the whole completion!
We will get smashed 4 - 0 every game!
We really lucked out!
The other Asian qualifiers Japan, Korea drew much weaker groups.
Iran's group is pretty tough but nowhere near as tough as ours.
Our chances of going through to the 2nd Round were always going to be pretty slim, but in another group we would've had at least a chance.

FIFA as usual is a fucking disgrace. Their seedings are totally absurd.
They seeded minor countries like Switzerland and Belgium but didn't seed top nations like Netherlands or Italy.
It has resulted in a totally unbalanced draw with lots of top teams in some groups and lots of weaker teams in other groups.

It's put me in a shitty mood ...
Fuck I need to get a nice R & T to chill out ...

I can totally agree with you brother rooter,

What we need now is back to back BBBJ DT CIM & SW !!

Too angry and disappointed to even fuck, right ?

ps.

I think our best chance in the World Cup was in Germany - if we didn't lose with that disgraceful penalty, anything was possible !!

Let's just concentrate on what we are good at and can win, like the ASHES !!

Don't get me started, I was in Kaiserslautern. :-(

Actually, too late. Fuck you Bresh you fucking lazy cunt, fucking stay on your feet Neill you brainless hack, fuck you Grosso, and fuck you most of all Totti. Gggrrrrrrrrr, it still burns.

We'd have pulled Ukraine in the Quarters and been every chance of going on to the Semi's, where I've no doubt we would have been creamed by the Germans, but still. It's the best chance we'll EVER have of making a World Cup semi. :-(

The draw in South Africa was awfully kind to us too. If we'd have snagged 2nd spot in our group we'd have been even money against USA to then go up against our old foe Uruguay in the Quarters. Fuck you Pim on that one, he totally bent us over by playing a high line against the Germans in Durban.

Anyways, we're utterly screwed next year. Fancy pulling both 2010 Finalists!! Lol. We've done exceptionally well in our last few games against the Dutchies, but they're a totally different proposition in tournament compared to the friendlies we've played.

Hopefully we just get something out of it and (rightly) treat it as preparation for the Asian Cup. We're hosting it only 6 months after Brazil, and it's a realistic shot at continental silverware .... that should be what we're aiming towards imo.

You won't find me defending the corrupt cunts at FIFA HQ too often, but I don't know what else they could do here really. They used the end October world rankings to work out the seeds, choosing not to use November's as it would have unfairly advantaged the teams that played the extra few knockout ties in qualification. I think that's the right way to do it.

Belgium are a great young team and a real dark horse to win the whole thing, they've absolutely smashed their qualification group. The Swiss being ranked so high (they are one spot above the Netherlands) is really the only surprise, but likewise they qualified strongly (undefeated), even if they did have the easiest group in UEFA.

On the whole the rankings are probably better this time because you don't have a really average team (South Africa) or two (Japan & South Korea) getting preference as hosts. Brazil have a rubbish ranking at the moment, but that's purely a by-product of not having played through the qualifying tournament and picking up points for the last two years. Seeding them as hosts is an absolute no-brainer.

Well Brother PP,

Let's look on the bright side, we will never do as worst as our first World Cup in West Germany in 74 where we played three games, no win, no draw, no point and NO Goal until Timmy Cahill scored that first ever world cup goal against Japan (incidentally also in Germany) !!

I will be very happy if we can draw one game in Brazil and score in all three matches. We have nothing to lose, let's give our young socceroos a go and look forward to the Asian Cup as your pointed out.

Cheers

Depends on what we handle pressure and face adversity, this would either be a complete waste of time or a great experience for our younger players to build on the next cup

I hate to be "that guy", but we did have a 0-0 draw in 1974, against Chile actually. Shame we'll need to better that to stand ANY chance in this group.

I was also there when St Timmy grabbed our first (and 2nd) ever WC goal(s) against Japan in 2006, also in Kaiserslautern .... wouldn't trade that day for anything, fucking amazing last 8 minutes, and I'll go to my grave forever thankful for being one of the 20,000 Aussies lucky enough to score tickets.

but it is still the best group to watch. Australia might put in a few surprises. I would definitely like to see how they fare up against Spain. Tiki taka vs AFL/Rugby style football.

Unfortunately we are 59 in the rankings the next best or worst is Chile at 15 that is a big difference. A lot of work to do to survive but remember we were unlucky not to beat Italy in the last world cup.

That was 2006, and our Golden Generation under an absolute genius in Guus. ;-) So those days are unfortunately long behind us, just qualifying for Brazil was an achievement in itself under Holger.

Tiki taka vs AFL/Rugby style football.

Ange prefers to play a real possession-based style too, so it will be really interesting to see how he approaches these games. Go at them too much and we'll just open spaces for them to carve us on the counter.

Great preparation for 2015 though, and I have a lot of belief that the youth systems now in place will soon start to produce the goods. The new generation of our players making their way in Europe are just starting to come through, so we'll be in a much stronger position in 2018.

I will be up late at night or first thing in the morning rooting for the Socceroos (as in the American meaning of rooting, not the Australian meaning!)
I guess I am a sucker for punishment - the Socceroos have given me so much heartache over the years:
The penalty and sending off of Harry Kewell in the game against Ghana that effectively ended our campaign in South Africa 2010.
The Grosso dive and penalty that ended our hopes in Germany 2006.
The slaughter in Montevideo that excluded us from Japan/Korea 2002
The fiasco at the MCG against Iran that excluded us from France 1998
The brave but unsuccessful qualifier against Argentina (led by the brilliant and cocaine snorting Diego Maradona) and missing USA 1994
Having to play fucking Scotland a nation half a world away (they had some genuine stars back then and were coached by Sir Alex Ferguson) and missing Mexico 1986.
Losing a qualifier against New Zealand, New fucking Zealand! and missing Spain 1982.

So yeah, I will be there again; hoping for the best - expecting the worst!

I am trying to be inspired by North Korea in 1966 who defeated the highly fancied Italy and the then went 3-0 ahead of Portugal in the Quarter Final. The Portuguese inspired by a hat trick by the legendary Eusebio, ended up winning 5-3.
but it was still a great achievement. The team went back to North Korea and given a heroes reception and government housing, pensions, benefits etc.
As for the 2010 North Korean team that got hammered in every game - well no one knows what happened to those poor bastards when the went back home - probably ended up in a forced labour camp!

Very good example !

Considering we almost beaten Italy in 2006 and they went on to win the Cup! Any thing is possible and we did draw with Chile in 74. So what if we can beat Chile and draw either with Spain or Holland ! Or both!

One win and one or two draws may be enough to move to the next round !

And don't forget Senegal in 2002 who upset defending World Champions France 1-0 in the opening game of the tournament.

Well, lets not forget in 2002, S Korea beat Italy in the round of 16, then Spain in quarter final, only just lost to Germany in the semi !

No one gave the kimchi boys any chance beyond the group stage !

In 2010 New Zealand were the ONLY unbeaten team among the 32 competing nations, with a much weaker squad than the current Socceroos (admittedly they were drawn in a much weaker group as well, although it included then world champions Italy). It showed that with the right application, and a bit of luck, anything could happen in soccer.

Well NZ did very well but they didn't progress and as in all sports its about winning in the end and to win you have to score goals.

For my money, one of the most interesting questions is if Australian Lucas Neil is going to survive to play in the World Cup 2014

I was very disappointed as we all were with our recent defensive efforts against world class opposition (Brazil and France)

If that happens again, and our defence shows holes wider than those on the Titanic, then surely his position is no longer tenable

Punter Poontang
10-12-2013, 09:29 PM
He's currently without a club, yet again, so won't be getting near a team under Ange until he does.

From what I read, looks like his team in Japan might not exercise the option to keep him next year and will cut him loose.

So, expect to see him getting torn up in the A-League this time next month!! You heard it here first. :-P

harmony
10-12-2013, 09:31 PM
Yes Punter
There are few Socceroos who currently hold a first grade position in world professional football

We are essentially a top grade amateur team, and this point will be wallpapered over by patriotic pride so we all get our hopes up before they are slammed up against the wall of reality

I suggest Lucas Neil retire from his current position and instead join us here on the forum

Perhaps he can lead us to a tour of Brazil 2014, and after each game, we can learn about the skills of ball playing with the local ladies

harmony
12-12-2013, 12:31 AM
Yeah Punter
Petty boycotts wont stop the FIFA corporation making a tidy pile of cash

But I agree, too many crowds are a serious turn off

A friend I met earlier in the year told me she was definitely planning to go, and was looking for a few people to go with her

My first reaction was to run a million miles in the other direction

Finding affordable hotel accommodation there, without any local knowledge, just seemed like too much of a headache

Not in the mood to blow plenty of cash with a package deal

And punting at such a peak time would either be a no go zone or absolute paradise

I predict the former - sharing no end of infections with fellow tourists from Europe, Africa, SE Asia etc
