19 years old aussie Nick Kyrgios saved 9 match points to win a sensational five set match against the seeded Richard Gasquet.
Nick has the strength of character, determination, and balanced temperament to be a great champion.
Watching him play, you could see many similarities with the great Australian champions of times past –
Rod Laver, John Newcombe, Margaret Court, Ken Rosewall, and Yvonne Goolagong.
Things are now looking very good for Australian tennis with this talented young man.
Let’s see how far he can go.

Good onya Nick Kyrgios.

This young guy Nick Kyrgios won again last night at wimbledon, another great match.
Now he goes into the 4th round and he's up against Rafa Nadal the world number one.
It's gonna be a great match tomorrow, he's got an outside chance and has nothing to lose.

Good luck to Nick Kyrgios.

Correction : when Sampras won his first grand slam the US Open in 1990 as a 19 yo, he was not an unknown , he ranked 61 at the start of the season and finished as no 5 by year end!

Nick currently ranks 144 in the world !

I think after the 4 sets this morning, Nick can beat any one - it's just a matter whether he can hold his nerve together and consistently slam down those big serve, if he can, he will win tonight in 3 sets !!

I only watched the 1st and 4th set this morning and most of his service games he held to Love, so Nadal didn't have much opportunities to break Nick, on the other hand, Nick had a lot more chances, that's why when it came to the tie break in the first set, I knew he'll win as his serves were too good.

One other thing I like about his game this morning was that he played within himself and wasn't going for the big winner during the rally and that's very important and his court management was quite good too.

Cheers

Fantastic commentary from you guys, isn't this kid (only 19yrs) the business. He has all the hallmarks of the
previous aussie greats: Laver, Newcombe, Rosewall, Court & Goolagong, that is he's got great talent and the right temperament.
My only minor concern is that he is still growing physically and there's a question, as always, as to whether his body can recover
over and over again at this level and at this time. The next guy he plays has already had more recoverty time than Nick.
Nevertheless, he is doing fantastically well regardless.

You were the one started this thread, thanks for that, but sorry, I can't agree with your comments above, it's way too early to compare Nick with some of our all time greats, he won 1 match against the world no. 1, it's a great effort but let's see him win a few more matches before we start labelling him !!

And What's the point of comparing Nick with the great Margaret Court ??

If you must compare, I will use Bernard Tomic and Mark Philippoussis.

Tomic is still playing and he reached the QF in Wimbledon back in 2011, so Nick has already match that !!

But for the Greek heritage and physique, and the big serve, I think Mark Philippoussis will be a good comparison, Mark was a very good player in his days, reaching two grand slam finals and ranked as high as no. 8.

If Kyrgios can reach the final this year at Wimbledon, he would have matched one of the Scub's achievements !! But before that, he has to meet Federer in the Semi and most likely Novak in the final. So if he can win this - he would have beaten three of the all times great champions in modern days in the space of a week !!

One can only dream on !!

In terms of ATP Ranking, Nick currently has 400 points and ranks no. 144

By reaching the Grand Slam quarter final, he will get 360 = 760

to reach the Semi 720 + 400 = 1,120

to reach the Final 1,200 + 400 = 1,600

To win the Championship 2,000 + 400 = 2,400

So, this is what will happen on next Monday (US time !) when the new ranking is released:

If Nick lost tonight he can go as high as #67

Reaching the semi - #35

Reaching the final - #23

Winning ! - #15

Those are the best case situation and depending on other players' improvement on ranking based on their respective Wimbledon performance, Nick can drop a few places lower but you get the picture.

A Top 50 ranking will get him into most tournaments and perhaps get a seeding !!

Go Nick !!

Just slight misunderstanding; I don't compare Nick Kyrgios with Rod Laver, John Newcombe, Ken Rosewall, Margaret Court, Yvonne Goolagong,
or Pat Rafter. I just make the point that he has the essential talent and good temperament just like the greats of Australian tennis.
Yes, he has a long way to go to come close to Laver, Newcombe, Rosewall, Court etc in terms of achievements, but I can see in his style
and temperament that he has the right foundations. However, Tomic's temperament is all over the place. Philippoussis was better, but he
didn't have the all round game of Nick Krygios. If Nick stays healthy and injury free, and can maintain the level headed temperament, he can
go a long way in the sport, because he's still only 19yrs. Anyway, he's going fantastically well, let's hope for the best tonight.

Cheers....

I think it was a great effort by Nick Kyrgios and he is to be congratulated lets hope he can go on to higher things.

it will be interesting to see how he goes in his next match.

Beating the world number one is no mean feat but it is only one match lets keep it all in perspective.

As a true Aussie it would be great to see him become another champion but he still has a long way to go to be even spoken of in the same sense as our great champions of the past.

I wish him well and hope he can make it.

As you know, I'm not usual interested in detailed statistics, but this is quite interesting I must say.
Anyway, not long now, so all the very best to the young Canberra kid whose shaking up the tennis world,

Bad luck Nick Kyrgios, it was always going to be difficult to front up & psyche up again, so quickly after the Nadal victory.
But that's Grand Slam tennis. Nevertheless, he definitely has the game to do big things in due course. It was great to hear
Rod Laver talk about Nick in such glowing terms. Anyway, better luck next year - he'll be stronger and a little more savvy.

Yes, very true, it was such a high after beating the world no. 1 Player and then have to back it up again the next day!

Raonic is basically doing a Nick Kyrgios to Nick, the way Nick did it to Nadal

The figures don't lie :

Milos Raonic (CAN) Nick Kyrgios (AUS)
39 Aces 15
2 Double faults 1
78 of 111 = 70 % 1st serves in 103 of 144 = 72 %
69 of 78 = 88 % 1st serve points won 69 of 103 = 67 %
22 of 33 = 67 % 2nd serve points won 22 of 41 = 54 %
134 MPH Fastest serve 129 MPH
121 MPH Average 1st serve speed 116 MPH
107 MPH Average 2nd serve speed 96 MPH
20 of 30 = 67 % Net points won 11 of 17 = 65 %
4 of 9 = 44 % Break points won 1 of 1 = 100 %
53 of 144 = 37 % Receiving points won 20 of 111 = 18 %
73 Winners 34
25 Unforced errors 22
144 Total points won 111

It was the exact opposite when Nick was facing Nadal:

Nick Kyrgios (AUS) Rafael Nadal (ESP)
37 Aces 11
4 Double faults 3
98 of 144 = 68 % 1st serves in 100 of 137 = 73 %
81 of 98 = 83 % 1st serve points won 77 of 100 = 77 %
25 of 46 = 54 % 2nd serve points won 22 of 37 = 59 %
133 MPH Fastest serve 125 MPH
120 MPH Average 1st serve speed 112 MPH
99 MPH Average 2nd serve speed 90 MPH
10 of 16 = 63 % Net points won 16 of 20 = 80 %
1 of 4 = 25 % Break points won 1 of 3 = 33 %
38 of 137 = 28 % Receiving points won 38 of 144 = 26 %
70 Winners 44
31 Unforced errors 18
144 Total points won 137

Well, there are a lot of stats but I just like to highlight a couple of keys facts:

Against Nadal, Nick served 37 aces vs 11 from Nadal

But with Raonic, Nick only served 15 aces while Raonic did 39 ! That's just about the ball game - when your biggest weapon is not big enough for your opponent !

Also, Nick hitted 70 winner vs 44 from Nadal

while Raonic had 73 vs Nick's 34

Enough said !!

But nevertheless, it's a great effort and I'm sure Nick will learn and benefit a lot from his Wimbledon campaign and be a much better player !!

Well done Nick, you have made us all very proud .

Cheers

Bouchard is the reason why I'm even watching women's tennis.. No offence but it tend to be boring and one-sided game compared to the men's version. However, I pick Simona Halep to win the Wimbledon this year, just because she deserves to win a title after her performance lately. Not that Bouchard doesn't deserve it, but she has a bright future ahead. Halep lost to Sharapova at Rolland Garros last month on epic 3 set and 3 hours game, So I think it's time for her to pay her due.

If the Canadian guy who beat Nick Kyrgios keeps serving the same way, he'll very probably be Wimbledon Champion.
He's got a brilliant serve, and his ground strokes are good too. He's on the up, and he'll be hard to beat.
