First time I heard this album I went to a pawn shop and hocked the beautiful Omega watch my grandmother gave me and a bought a saxophone.
After months of fruitless effort and realising how hard it is to play the fucker I went back to the pawn shop and hocked it for cash and then spent the proceeds on a trip to the Gold Coast and drugs.
My grandmother wasn't rich - far from it - that watch was probably a few years worth of savings from her pension.
Every time she saw me she asked me why i wasn't wearing the watch she gave me and every time i made up bull shit excuse, and I felt like a complete cunt.
Anyway Giant Steps is a great album and Coltrane was a fucking maestro and a fucking genius.

What's lost in the discussion is that the band has serious talent, the choreography is perfect for the act and they're a bit of fun. I know they have helped introduce my daughter to the wonderful world of metal.

I do tend to stick mostly with the classics, but Mastodon, Gojira, Prophets of Rage (not strictly metal I know) have some great stuff. Too many of the bands today sound like clones of one another. It was telling when the big 4 all released albums a couple of years ago that, by their own standards, were average, and they won all sorts of awards.

Still the best thing Parkway ever did. I remember seeing them support Hatebreed at the Gaelic Club innnnnnnn, I'm gonna say 2005? They only had the EP out and were the first band on. Crowd was empty, and they came out and just completely destroyed it. Jeff played the taps during that epic breakdown towards the end of the song with the guitar behind his head. First laid eyes and ears on The Living End at The Sydney Entertainment Center in I think 1996, supporting AC/DC on their Stiff Upper Lip Tour, me and a few mates were among probably a couple of hundred peeps who took the time to hear them out before the main event, AC/DC were more than generous letting them use probably half of their Amp output. I was blown away at the raw sound coming from just three individuals and that Double Bass, backed up by some heavy ACDC artillery was fucking awesome……….

It's fair to say that over the past few days I haven't been my normal self, I've been adrift in a sea of red roses, daydreams, sunset walks on the beach, and I'll be honest, mediocre metaphors.
This morning on the drive to school, L.P. decided that enough was enough and I needed to snap out of it, she caught me humming Elton John for christs sake! Anyhow, she whacked this on in the car and normal service has been resumed.. I love some Gary Holt riffing, not hard to see why he was drafted in to Slayer when the great Jeff Hannemann fell ill (r.i.p to the Angel of Death).
